Question. I don't have any stance in global warming because I'm not educated on it. But I've seen record temperatures on the news sometimes that are old af. My question is, is it global warming or does the earth just change weather patterns over long periods of time?

Both. Weather patterns definitely change but this is being driven by climate change. Although there are some crazy years here and there from the 1930s, the last few years (I think 2016 onwards last I saw) have been consistently getting hotter/staying above average, which indicates a trend upwards

unnnatural global warming is marked by extreme weather alongside the usual temperature increases

the fact that the average global temperature has increased by nearly 1.5° in 150 years is 100% unnatural

Not that we shouldn't be concerned with the heat but one of the big reasons this heatwave hit Vancouver so hard is because most people don't have A/C in their homes there. Mainly because temperatures are usually pretty cool there and when it does get hot, people are able to cool their homes at night. But it stayed 30 degrees celsius at night

At this point the damage might be done, we just have to adapt and plan ahead. Our leaders need to show some political will or else the cost to the health care/infrastructure system from inclement weather will be catastrophic.

Don't be completely pessimistic though. I've always felt that something like this won't be truly addressed until people can actually see the effects in front of them. Then people will really get to work on solutions. Historically humanity does its best when things get dire, unfortunately and fortunately.

The GOP is full on the party of nihilism at this point.

84 years ago Canada’s old national heat record was 45 degrees Celsius, or 113 Fahrenheit.

a lot of people have rightfully said that the global temperature has increased, but another big factor is that these kinds of record heat waves (and other extreme weather) become worse and more frequent with climate change.

showyourstripes.info has a really good visualization of this. you can see that globally the lines suddenly get a lot redder but if you narrow down on a region there’s usually some red lines scattered throughout and a lot more red and darker lines towards the end
