For those of you who swear you know more than the actual artist making careers out of music.

“I start with the music first before the drum programming which is very unorthodox because most hip hop producers start with the drum programming first”
Obviously there’s no rules to making music but I’m highly surprised by how many of y’all are saying s*** like “doing drums first makes no sense” “you should only do drums first if it’s trap only that”
It’s like y’all sit here and invent your own rules of what you think is the “correct way” even tho it contradicts what most professionals are doing. Doing things your way is perfectly fine but stop acting like it’s a rule and any other way is pointless
what he said about how he routes, is how mostly everyone should route from the machine to the mixer pre faders
Drums. But nothing wrong with Finding a melody first then altering it to fit with the drums.
Drums are more about rhythm and speed which it’s easier to play around with the melody after you know how the tempo and fills will be
I imagine drums first is easier if you’re working with an MPC?
i havent used a beatpad in years but i can still build self made melodies over programmed drums
lot of time i use effects & swing to make my drums sound more natural & rhythmic tho
i only really do the general simple 2 and 4 Rap drums if im doing a really hard or really chill beat most the time
I wouldn't talk s*** about producers starting with drums first...9th ...Madlib
Considering what they have cooked up I wouldn't talk s***
If the end result bangs...why complain? I am a pretty s***ty producer but my best beats started with laying drums
9ths drums are a joke are you serious

Yeah famously weak but his drums on Duckworth were snapping, i was refusing that beat was him in my head when it dropped because the drums on that song are hard
Yeah I am
In my opinion melody first guarantees your beats will never sound the same
that makes no sense to me unless you're just not good at percussion in general, or just lay the same ish down all the time having a hard time coming up with more
the only answer is both depending on what you feel like.
If you only do one, try the other sometimes and see what happens
I always master my track before opening the daw
i tune the hertz before i wake up
anything else is amateur
All of these pro producers cited are just using the method that suits them and their workflow the best.
It’s the end product that matters, it doesn’t matter how you get there.
does that method still work as simply when you dont want the sample to match the bpm or time signature of the beat? that does seem like it would make live recording on pads sound a little more natural
Not sure if I’m following your question but basically you warp a sample so it’ll match your BPM. So if you change the pitch on the sample it’ll still match the BPM. If you change the BPM on your song the sample will sync up properly. It’s just a great way of keeping .wav files in sync with your MIDI files
Starting with drum or bass makes 0 sense to me
Think of it this way. Ima assume you produce.
When you lay a melody you use a metronome right so you know what tempo you’re working in?
Well think of starting with drums as a better sounding metronome

i'd mute my drums so i can focus on the melody i'm making

I’m confused on how people can see some of the greatest hip hop producers method and think “that’s wack” “that makes no sense”
You kinda start to think maybe that’s why their successful and the guys hating isn’t?
And not the mere fact that they do drums first cus 40 does melodies first but I’m pretty damn sure he understands and also knows how to make beats with drums first.
If someone is a producer and can’t understand why using drums first is equally as good of a method as melody first then maybe they shouldn’t be producing? And I’m talking those that think it’s wack or don’t understand it. Not those that understand but don’t prefer doing it that way.

I switched from Maschine to Ableton. Got tired of using multiple programs. Use to use Maschine to create and Logic to structure it out but basically is like the two of those combined.

Word there’s absolutely no right or wrong answer when It comes to creating. As long as the end product sounds dope.

yeah Im considering Abelton heavy, just seems way more convenient, quality, plus better sampling capabilities, organization
Everything

This isn’t a thread of “which method is correct”
Really this thread was to discuss what other producers methods is and compare but a bunch of niggas ITT started weighing in they opinion as if they know more than the professionals
