I imagine drums first is easier if you’re working with an MPC?

    not inherently

    Sampling funk breaks is goat

if you chop up impeach the president and put it over literally anything is sounds goat

  • Delejayn

All the goats use d**** first

Feel me? Like bro if mixedbyali says for TPAB they started with drums and bass first then I don’t wanna hear s*** else because the music on that album is crazy. Wasn’t just samples chopped up it was chord progressions live instruments all of that. S*** most these niggas wish they could do. And guess what they mostly started with drums.

It doesn’t make that method “correct” but I’m still surprised how niggas is hating on a well used method by most goats

i'd mute my drums so i can focus on the melody i'm making

Do you mean when it’s time to lay it? Or you mean you laid it and now you tweaking it?

If it’s the latter I’m sure everyone does that. But I’d hope everyone in here uses some sorta click track when recording melodies unless you just have godly tempo

i don't record melodies i click the notes in

yeah Im considering Abelton heavy, just seems way more convenient, quality, plus better sampling capabilities, organization

    Everything

Bro the f***ing capture feature is CRAZY. Idk if other DAWs got it. But basically say you load up an instrument and you f***ing around to see how it sounds and you play something that’s fire but you weren’t recording yet. You can just click “capture” and it’ll add the MIDI notes of what you was just recording.

It’s like Ableton is always recording even if you aren’t actually recording.

You can always work a dope beat around a perfect melody

Not sure if I’m following your question but basically you warp a sample so it’ll match your BPM. So if you change the pitch on the sample it’ll still match the BPM. If you change the BPM on your song the sample will sync up properly. It’s just a great way of keeping .wav files in sync with your MIDI files

i just mean like the dilla song i posted earlier had a completely different time signature from the sample. And sometimes producers will play with a sample that doesnt match the song's bpm.

Let’s talk about this. So it’s rare to do drums first and work melodies around it is what you’re saying?

So if that’s the case can one assume to be successful as a producer you should have this rare skill? Not that you NEED to work this way but you can if needed.

Because it’s rare to be a household Lasting name as a producer, obviously not everyone can do it. And to you doing drums first is rare, yet 90% of successful hip hop producers do it while those who can’t is stuck. So is that 1 of the many factors you think?

I’m not too knowledgeable with time signatures honestly I’m still learning. Everything I’ve done is 4/4

I wasn’t thinking of hip hop material tbh, it’s a different type of craft

In hip hop if you don’t have a beat you’re out the game

I hope for your sake that’s 100% and not just cap. If it is true keep going but remember you can always get better and you should wanna elevate from just being a “click note” producer

If you are capping then same thing, elevate yourself is the name of the game no matter what you’ve done. It’s never enough trust me. Get more.

I don’t wanna discourage bruh but ain’t a producer that lasted long by just “clicking in notes”.....you gotta elevate and grow. And not being able to play at least a midi controller or go off drums first is very limiting to ya craft
