I’m gonna listen to The Mail Man EP today (it’s 8 tracks so I feel like it deserves a spin plus federal was so good and in a major way sounds like it’s very important so Mail man should be good)
The Mail Man EP (1993)
A slight detour after his debut release, The Mail Man EP is a concise set of tracks featuring that signature 90’s Bay Area funk. It features one of 40’s earliest hits “Captain Save A Hoe” which sounded really familiar to me, because it’s the song UGK sampled for “Choppin Blades”. I believe Studio Ton handled most of the production which makes sense cuz tbh the EP does feel like a continuation of Federal and any of these tracks could’ve fit perfectly within that track list.
Think I’ll go with a 3 out of 5
Favorite songs: Neva Broke, Practice Lookin Hard, Captain Save A Hoe
When I search e-40 only one thread comes up and it’s not this one
Oh well
Today I will be bumping In A Major Way
People been telling me about this one

Ok so, Earl Stevens at this point in time has just landed a deal with Jive, even though he’s been selling tapes out the trunk and running his own label Sick Wid It. For this album he starts it off a little slow. Intro beat goes hard, kinda would’ve like to hear some rapping on that but nonetheless 40 water is flamboastin. After the short skit that easily could’ve been tacked to the end of the intro, the album kicks off. Each song is consistently hard and more polished than his previous albums. Sideways is track 4 and I feel like that’s when the album ramps up, the beat is just too groovy. Spittin goes dumb especially with the opening lyrics “Woke up in the AM, toasted out of my cranium, gotta take a s*** took a dump in the Mediterranean”. Sprinkle Me is some funky soulful s***, and 40’s carefree hook just makes my worries disappear. The skits on this album are sort of pointless, there was that short skit earlier and then mid album there’s one last skit of a man getting in a car to go get p****, he then crashes his car as gun shots are ringing out literally from every angle. The skits really serve no purpose but i can easily brush that s*** off for how funky s*** is. Rest of the album is just really consistent with what the first half was giving but with no skits. Other major highlights include 1-Luv, a hard ass song about his people in the slammer, Smoke N Drank, Bootsee and It’s All Bad. The album then caps off with a really, really, really nice chill beat while B-Legit and E-40 talk back and forth about their Sick Wid It Records empire kinda to the beat but not really rapping. Overall, it sounds like E-40’s vision became clearer with this one. The clean production was thanks to Funk Daddy, Kevin Gardner, Mike Mosley, Eugenius, Sam Bostic and our guy Studio Ton.

I keep forgetting to put this in my past couple reviews that E-40’s son, Droop-E, has verses on these albums at only like 7 years old.
grandfathered into the game

Tha Hall Of Game (1996)
It’s pretty much the height of East vs West beef and Rasheed Wallace disses E-40 on Rap City on television. 40 addresses this first and foremost for his third album on Record Haters which is also a diss to AZ. With each album E-40 seems to become the rapper we all know him as. He’s perfecting his craft and delivering game. Songs like Rappers Ball, Million Dollar Spot and Ring It, a song dedicated to the pager that features a young Keak Da Sneak, all bring the smooth player vibes to the table. My Drinking Club, Keep Pimpin and I Like What You Do To Me keep that funk spirit well alive that someone like George Clinton would appreciate. Some of the best moments on the album are the more personal one such as I Wanna Thank You, The Story, and Things’ll Never Change. On these tracks, Earl pays homage to his OG’s and reflects on his life. Production wise, this is the first time we get to hear legendary producers Ant Banks and Rick Rock’s beats on an E-40 album and they do their justice. Studio Ton also gets allot of production credit for this very nice LP. There were only 2 skits this time and both were game from a pimp so definitely a better theme than the random skits from In A Major Way. Despite a filler song or two that I might skip, the album is very consistent and extends on pimp/baller themes and more serious/introspective subject matter. I personally always really liked the cover for this one too.
