Earl talked about having a "happy" album but then discarded it because it wouldn't be honest to how he was feeling.

How can you expect a socially aware black man or...anyone that was paying attention these last 2 years to come away with just a "happy" mindset when clearly it's the opposite.

I saw this post the first time. I just thought it could be an interesting direction, and anyone can easily be happy and socially aware if they don’t dwell on it, focus on doing what they can but not catastrophizing over what they can’t, and don’t spend all their time on twitter.

Going from a lead single like grief to a lead single like nowhere2go is huge growth and if you can't see that idk what to tell you man. He even said in a zane lowe interview when that song dropped that he wasn't in a wallowing place anymore. And like it's been mentioned in this thread, a conscious black man is not going to put out the kind of happy album you might have in mind. Luckily being conscious doesn’t restrict you from being happy at all, and the real reason Earl can’t feel like I feel is his professional victim defeatist mindset.
