Dawg I meant in a mainstream way of trap being popularized. The average rap listener didn’t know what trap was before them and you can’t say that’s wrong.

yes rap listeners knew what trap was prior to then, if you didn’t you weren’t listening to rap like that

A guy like future for example who is huge, but the only time he did over 300k was with drake, a guy like thug who has insane influence but will never sell anywhere near as much as the artists he influences

Doesn’t matter. The most rapper with hits last decade besides drake was future

He never did numbers because he flooded the market too much and leaks

Future is doing samsung commercials though. He doesnt have huge first weeks because he releases music constantly whether its his own stuff or a feature so he over-saturates himself. So then when he drops an album it doesnt have the hype behind it to become a moment and generate those big first week sales.

As for Thug he never really made the most accessible music and was kind of a weird divisive character when he came on the scene. It took the mainstream 4-5 years to realize he was actually good all along

Thug never did numbers because he over saturated himself. Leaks. Never actually did a album promo. Was terrible with album releases. And took zero advice from any label trying to market his releases.

He could of been selling 100k first week Atleast during 2016-18 if he wasn’t so stubborn for his own good

idk if he wouldve been a 100k type of artist but that definitely played into it too

I don’t remember the numbers but based on the momentum future had going into DS2 if he was just a “rapper” & not a trapper dude would have done like 300-400k at least, & with thug I suppose I can agree somewhat, but it took a million co signs including from j cole for him to finally near his influence that has to with him being a trap artist if you ask me

most people associate introduction of modern trap to lex Luger since he lay groundwork

But yeah earl is right saying lots of artists we call trap aren’t trap.

current drill production is not like how drill was when it first started.

Chicago Drill and NY Drill sound very different. The latter you might as well call UK grime lol.

earl saw that his new album was tagged as trap on rym

he should live with it though, as we call rappers like carti trap in the modern ages

But also 808s been preceding 'trap music'. Miami bass music was full of that s***. You wouldn't call that trap because it wasn't the subject matter.

Lol what a reach, no person that doesn't know a little about music would confuse miami bass with trap. Trap as a production style didn't come about until Tip's 24's produced by Shawty Redd back in 03/04 which was combining the triplet and quad hi-hats and snares which wasn't done before.

Gucci, Jeezy, and TI were definitely very popular for at least 5 years before Future & Migos came onto the scene

Song structure was definitely different with those artists, placement of drums, bpm, triplets etc was similar but not what it is today
