that's literally what the word means in contemporary music

if you put trap sounds in a song it has trap influence, sure it doesn't mean it necessarily exists in the trap genre, but if it has trap sounds it has trap sounds. the same way if something has boom bap drums and sounds it is boom bap influenced

Trap music is literally a sound and subject matter together

Obviously the instrumentation used in trap music became popular overtime that it is now used in most of rap today and even pop music but just because someone is using the instruments doesn’t mean it’s “trap music” or a “trap album”

Because rap is way too large and diverse of a genre for everything to be labeled “rap” or “hip hop”

People associate trap with the sound more than they do the subject matter now. Not to mention that trap originally was a subgenre which is why it was so easily distinguishable from other forms. Now is pretty much IS the genre.
