Yes there was. You just described how it happened

“It just happened that mainstream rap production became heavily similar to the stuff trap rappers been rapping on”

People associate trap with the sound more than they do the subject matter now. Not to mention that trap originally was a subgenre which is why it was so easily distinguishable from other forms. Now is pretty much IS the genre.

Well people are wrong and it is what this thread is about lol

VLONE-core, drip rap, call it however you want i guess, doesn't really matter

    Trap is d*** pusher music

That s*** is either d*** usage or some fashion s*** music (they may have had some actual trap content though, i can't recall off top of the head)

content and sonics are both elements of music

you can have a trap beat and an artist like gucci or an artist like uzi can jump on it, doesn't matter what lyrical content is put on it, it's still a trap beat.

you can have a trap artist make a love song with the exact same sonic palate they usually do, doesn't make it not trap music.

genre labels aren't hard lines, everything is fluid and nuanced

Nah, if someone tells me they listen to rap and the only rap they listen to is Trippie Red and Lil Peep I’m looking at them funny

I would hardly call most of their music rap. A lot of that is some alternative s***

Those people don’t understand hip hop then. Because trap definition will never leave. If you keep letting niggas think these new niggas are doing trap albums just because they using trap drums and sounds then we gon be down the road 30 years later saying Travis Scott was the most impactful trap artist

He’s right but he’s wrong. Words are words and they get twisted b******ized and changed all the time. attempts to control it are just useless . Yes people mistakenly use the word but then enough people do it and that’s what it means now. It might change again, who knows and who cares imo.

Boy sounding like kyrie with the malapropisms

technically if you use an arpeggiator in a DAW on a hat sample you get a hi hat roll, so he's not wrong in using that word esp not as a producer himself

Who cares tbh. The shift of “trap” from subject matter to sound happened so long ago you just sound dusty if you still care bout it imo

It would still fall under a sub genre of rap though, which is my point

  • Jan 20, 2022

    Of course he’s right

Weak ass pop artists use trap drums but they’re still the furthest thing from trap music

Melodic rap. There is no particular sub genre same for all those rappers and I’ll be damned if I call it mumble rap

so if they make a song sans melody is it still melodic rap 💀

    Yall acting ignorant

Die Lit and Rodeo are obviously lauded because they’re PROGRESSIVE trap influenced albums

No one here is saying they sound exactly like 08 gucci or whatever

Why take a needlessly conservative definition for a subgenre.

say it again for the people in the back
