if they make a song without melody is it still melodic rap

One song out of 95% of their music being mostly melodic rap? I’ll still call them a melodic rapper imo. But trying to label these acts that came in post 2016 is hard. I’m just not down for calling them mumble rappers because that’s some s*** racist people and old heads created.

Uzi and carti specifically And even their peers from 2017 and up I call them all just lyricist. They made party songs. Melodic songs. And even have barred up. There is no specific name of the type of rappers they are so lil kids call it trap because of the drums which is fine they just don’t know

What? Uzi is hip hop / anime nerd from Philly who never had to sell d**** to make ends meet in his life.

Lol Nah he used to make trap music back when he was active on SoundCloud.

to be fair, post punk, new wave and no wave are 3 distinct genres:donshrug:

I mean I obviously know that. I may have worded it wrong. But when people like talking heads or joy division came they acted like it HAD to have a label. Critics will always find a name for a sound they don’t get or understand that isn’t traditional to the genre overall

now this is a conversation that actually has merit, because a lot of the time niggas don't even be rapping.

a lot of the time the label of rapper is based in one's brand moreso than their content. what a contemporary travis scott does and what an ariana grande do aren't that different

He should maybe talk to his boy Tyler who is so much more better and greater than other artists who use them.

I think this is fine but a different conversation, what the art is classified as and what the artist is classified as are different things

I don't think there's necessarily any intrinsic issue with calling a song like Drake's Feel No Ways a throwback pop record and calling something like Knife Talk a "trap song" while simultaneously calling him a rapper and a singer

i'm asking! it's not a easy to define thing. i have never considered him a rapper, even when he went by breezy lovejoy and was making songs with youtube rappers and s***. he has always had the timbre and "vibe" of a singer/instrumentalist to me and i think especially with the bruno collab record that's what most people see him as

Those people don’t understand hip hop then. Because trap definition will never leave. If you keep letting niggas think these new niggas are doing trap albums just because they using trap drums and sounds then we gon be down the road 30 years later saying Travis Scott was the most impactful trap artist

    There’s two definitions

Being from Philly, I'm VERY familiar with all of Uzi's music. You have to be a trapper to make trap music

  • mollygatrr

rodeo by travis scott and taboo by denzel curry my fav trap albums 🔥

trap has so much potential when you incorporate psychedelic and maximalist influences, rodeo especially really blurs the line between 'trap rapper' and 'artist'. i can't believe he transcended the genre of annoying djs speaking all over the freaking 128kbps tracks

People need to realize you can use trap beats without making trap music or being a trap rapper

Idk. It’s tricky which is why I don’t really think it’s a bad thing to have subgenres because Anderson Paak is a person who toes the line of being a singer and a rapper and (imo) excels in both lol

    How is this wrong?

Like is there not trap (the sound) and trap (the genre)?

This is literally the modern hip hop climate rn
