Toronto’s sound is moody late night drive music like him, Nav, PND and Tory

He's right and I said this on a different thread. Drake cannot do what Kendrick just did. There is simply no equivalent to the cali sound, down south sound, Midwest or east coast. And everything these guys expounded upon is true too.

Kendrick has been building on this since euphoria saying "they run to America, they imitate heritage" and then nailed the point home on the last verse of not like us.

Doesn't really make sense as a criticism of any OVO artist other than Drake tbh.

not talking about the ENITRE project

i'm saying he must not have heard the albums at all considering they all feature several tracks that are clearly Toronto influenced or Toronto inspired

obviously a song like KMT for example is completely UK and grime inspired

KMT isn’t grime at all i think you’re confused

One thing I agree with in this clip, he doesn’t know how to approach the subject of being black so many odd lines

People having to cherry pick songs and albums from his catalog is proving the point

Drake turns the “Toronto sound” on and off. Switches up to accents and sounds from other regions a lot

Kendrick never suddenly sounds like he should be on the Top Boy show and the next minute wiping his nose with his slimes in Atlanta

a lot of people from toronto have like a broken uk accent and slang ive known someone from there for like 20 years speaking with an accent like that before drake leaned into it. drake growing up spent summers in the south so that is a real part of his life. he’s not imitating artists like how game or chris brown did

Is that why Abel said his sound is Drakes Toronto sound with a twist?

Is that why Partynextdoor picked his name because the sound reminded him of 40?

Is that why we have artists like Brent & Bryson?

  • manlikepablo

im guessing you missed the part where i said "our RnB is very dancehall/afrobeats inspired"...

“Inspired” doing alotta heavy lifting there

No such thing as regional in the digital age. We worldwide.

  • It’s interesting that people itt are naming many different and contrasting things.
I want to say Views is the most “Toronto” he’s ever sounded

I said there is no equivalent.. Due to the history of rap in America what Canada is doing does not compare.

idk what you're getting at. hip hop in the uk wasn't a thing until the 2000's or the earliest very late 90's and they don't consider grime hip hop so people like skepta, dizzee rascal, and a good amount of aj tracey's music isn't hip hop. the uk developed their own sound though and it's their's sure it wasn't made in 80's but it's their own sound. toronto has their own sound. sure it's not older than me but it's still the toronto sound doesn't matter how old or new it's a regional sound

He should’ve glued himself to boi1da, 40, and majid Jordan. Those three give him all the identity he needs

Well that’s because he’s the first massive star to do so Ebro is kinda being disingenuous Here

I can understand someone having a mixed cultural background and getting a unique accent that way

If you have a southern accent on songs with Migos because your dad is from the south, fine, but keep it consistent. Stick to being that person all the time

If your natural way of speaking is in a Toronto/UK/Caribbean accent, cool, then be that person all the time

But Drake doesn't get on songs with Migos sounding like the mandems. He could just be proud of where he's from and just rap with them with a Toronto accent but he doesn't

I like Drake but that strikes people as inauthentic, or lacking identity

has this guy never listened to Views or More Life? 😂 both unapologetically Toronto projects

he has a regional sound, its just not YOUR regional sound; the dude isnt even from your region 😂😂

and sure, he code switches and makes music to cater to US audiences (i'd easily argue more than 50% of his discography does this) but at the core his regional sound is Toronto influenced and he's displayed that numerous times throughout his discography

black people exist outside of the states too... what a tone deaf take

Nigga tell us why he was repping Houston more than Toronto until 2014 then also his Toronto sound is stolen from og niggaz like mo g smoke dawg, and niggaz from regent park. Bro a code switcher. He literally an actor

But Kendrick just invented g-funk tho, right?

  • He did for So Far Gone, Thank Me Later, NWTS, IYRTYTL, and some of Views. Might be time to get back to that.

  • drake created a regional sound and it took over the entire industry for a decade what are you talking about man
