Like when has rap ever been ran by a past generation?

You had Kendrick, Drake, Future and Cole for the 2010s

Kanye, Wayne, TI, Em, 50, Nelly for 2000s

    90s had their own legends

With the 2020s it's STILL Drake, Kendrick, Future, Kanye etc

It's stagnant atm and I think a big part of that is streaming making it extremely hard for newer artists to have any longevity

TELL THESE NEW NIGGAS TO GO ON A HARD D*** DETOX BEFORE THEIR NEXT LIVE SHOW BECAUSE ITS NO WAY A 45+ Y/O BUSTA RHYMES SHOULD HAVE BETTER BREATH CONTROL THAN NIGGAS NOT EVEN OLD ENOUGH TO LEGALLY DRINK

These new niggas be getting too high before their shows. that's why they aint selling out arenas no more.

Niggas got behind Central Cee but not Little Simz lol and one dropped a classic album.

Y’all don’t want s***. And I f*** with central cee but y’all like what you like.

    So that’s what niggas co-sign.

I'd prioritize Bad Bunny and Burna Boy as well

    They're GOAT

But at the same time tho its kinda funny cus Bad Bunny isn't even signed to a major and doesn't need one

Like the time to really have honed in on those genres were starting a few years ago. It doesn't feel like they actually aim to discover any new talent. They're relying on fans to point to them obvious signees again just like they did with rap

    Here’s the reason why:

In America, monoculture is dead and as a result, creating a new star or a popping, viable rap act is almost impossible.

However, that is not the case in other cultures and genres like afrobeats, Latin music, etc

They still get behind their prominent acts in a unifying, galvanizing matter. As such, the return on investment is far greater. Artists in those communities have entire sections of countries supporting them. That can’t happen in America anymore because there is no monoculture

This has nothing to do with the quality of music that’s a crazy insinuation. Y’all keep looking at s*** like this through a quality of music lense and it couldn’t be more wrong

edit: That's not to say, hip-hop leaning in to gangsta rap again hasn't played a part, it has...but the inability to create moments and momentum within culture is the far greater culprit here

Tbh I think we should put a conscious effort into restoring a monoculture in hip hop.
Not by killing off acts that don’t fit into it, but by all agreeing to get behind acts that we can all mostly agree have a chance and could go places.
Things are more fun with superstars imo

Exactly so you get what I’m saying. Drake dropping every year isn’t doing anything to keep the genre alive and interesting on a mainstream level. S*** is still dead even with him dropping year after year.

Exactly that’s the problem. But it isn’t their problem. Blame these new rappers who manage to cultivate all the hype in world and fail to live up to any of it at all.

We just gon act like the s*** that they’ve propped up wasn’t fire at the time? How are they supposed to know the trajectory of the rappers they propping up?

Shut up. You aren’t drakes strategist no matter how much you act like it. Go back to the Drake section and discuss him liking a tweet or catching a bra.

He's generating more interest and energy than the people that are supposed to be the new stars of the gen though. Outside of Travis.

Not even talking commercially cause that's not fair but just hype in general. Ice Spice has that even without sales, Carti too. When they drop music people watch and it's a moment

But for the large majority of artists this gen, they aren't able to capture moments like that and generate hype for themselves in that same way

Central cee is popping but he just got on billboard. That has zero to do with him and all to do with Drake.

If he did a freestyle with little Simz it would have the same effect.

Bro he is competing with them as well. Their most popular songs on their albums are Drake songs.

And the ones that don’t have Drake songs have to compete with actual Drake songs.

He isn’t helping them create any individual traction.
