Who has done more for rap music than him since the start of the 2010s decade? He's the leader of the last of a dying breed of superstar rappers but somehow he's a net negative?

I’m not understanding how him just being successful benefits the rest of the genre

I like most of his discography but the trends he brought in is what I’m mainly referring to. No singer hooks necessary anymore, the blurring of rappers and singers into one and how that subsequently affects R&B also, the framing of sales and numbers as the most important thing in a rap career, Lowkey could also trace the blurring of regionalism in rap to him too but that’s also just the internet in general and that has kinda come back.

ah so we went from “hip hop is in a perfectly fine place, y’all are out of touch” to “who cares lol, grow up”

very nice to see your integrity is intact

    a. allow anyone to touch that standard
    b. accept that maybe nobody will touch that standard

Afrobeat production is way to “chill” for me like it’s music meant to be listened to in some hookah lounge

I like smooth music but not like that

The reality is hiphop cannot die as long as people understand that it will shift as a culture from one end of whatever spectrum to the next, and it is something that cannot be distilled into a “purest form” anymore. trying to hold a cultural movement to a rigid and objective standard through gatekeeping rather than letting habits flow in and out is how rock died.

But a lot of those things didn't start with him. Rap's obsession with numbers definitely didn't start with Drake. Even singing/rapping didn't start with Drake. Yes, you could argue that he revolutionized what it means for a new generation but he didn't start that.

All the things you mentioned are things that also helped expand rap's reach as well as further it's influence/impact on pop culture, not to mention it's impact on the mainstream music market.

It's also ridiculous to blame him for things that are out of his control. It's not his fault a lot of these new rappers simply don't have the drive or talent to follow in his footsteps.

Most rappers today don't give a f*** about being the best or even being better than just okay. They're here for the ✨vibes✨ and to make money.

Gatekeepers served a purpose because they weeded out all the chaff and only the cream of the crop were ever able to rise to the top. Today, you don't have that. You can make a song, go viral on TikTok and have labels shoving record deals in your face within a week so you have a bunch of niggas who lack the passion and the drive for this s*** that the Drake/Kendrick/Cole generation had. That generation was filled with rappers who actually loved this s*** and cared deeply about it. Most of these new rappers just see rap as a way to get clout and a bag.

    this site loves drake 😂

quality control of graduation and dropout are just timeless

cole and kendrick fans swear their projects are on that level but they truly aren’t. from production to features to rollout they are just different beasts

creating something culturally relevant means saying and doing things that pertain to culture. kanye does that every rollout (for better or worse) which makes each rollout a conversation. kendrick and cole aren’t bold enough to do that

You’re not wrong. I guess I look to Drake to be the leader in terms of making perfect albums/setting the standard because he’s the biggest artist in the world but maybe that’s unreasonable.

i think the idea of hiphop’s cultural heads needing to be “gatekeepers” is far more detrimental than we take it to be

… are you saying Drake doesn’t try to make trap or street raps? cause he definitely does and those are his most streamed songs tbh

I’m telling you right now College Dropout definitely would not be loved if it dropped in 2023

A "paradigm shift" aint coming this site gotta let that go

Culture and society is so fragmented right now that it'll never happen. Everyone exists in their own little bubble now. We don't even have pop cultural moments that impact all of us anymore in music.
