I have a more lengthy post about just that but I agree, and it extends beyond just rap. Gen Z (born 1997-2012) is simply the first gen since the mass commoditization of music that doesn’t put the aspiration to become a crossover artist on a pedestal
We're talking about new artists dude.... people who were never on a major to begin with...
Obviously f***ing Drake and Beyonce aren't going to go to Bandcamp lmao.
NEW, INDEPENDENT LABELS can push their artists through social media and platforms like Bandcamp and flourish WITHOUT having to go through any kind of major label. It can happen now more than ever, hence the shift taking place
In order for this to work, you'd have to compete wiith Drake and Beyonce and everybody else thats on Apple and spotify to stream their music. This brings me back to my first point, nobody (especially hip hop fans) is going to an obsolete site for a new artist when their entire playlist is on spotify/apple music.
Ringtone rap was people liking the song so much they bought the snippet.
Tik Tok is liking the snippet so much you might stream the song.
songs were def made specifically with ringtones in mind much like ppl do with tiktok though
Rappers better stop being boring and talking about the same s*** over and over, chasing TikTok success and comment sections
yeah man a label saying this makes sense!!! theyre definitely not the ones pushing for these sorts of things!!!

We're just talking in circles here
We gonna have to agree to disagree
I see this as a good thing honestly. I feel like a lot of major labels try to get too involved with the making of albums. Telling artists the kinda tracks they want on the album instead of what the artist and even fans want on the albums. Telling artists what direction they want them to go in with their sound. It becomes too much of a too many cooks kinda situation. Maybe the less hands involved the better.
I'll also say this, Ebro is annoying as f*** and is a f***ing cornball who literally plays into the s*** he is complaining about in regards to "Stop being boring, talking about the same s***, and chasing TikTok success". Motherfucker YOU are the one who keeps giving that bullshit shine on your platform. YOU are this supposed "tastemaker" and unfortunately a "gatekeeper" in rap. You put on the bullshit the major labels tell you to put on the radio, creating the issues you wanna get all high and mighty about.
I cannot f***ing wait until Ebro is off the radio and is no longer a voice in hip-hop music. This old fart is f***in remedial.
Just don’t think people are grasping how hard it is in 2023 to take an artist, and turn them into a headline arena touring act that sells 300k first week. Bonafide superstar
The genre will die at some point if it can’t create this
As such, you see labels pivoting because this still can happen in other genres and factions, where a unifying commercial presence is still present.

Dude is a f***in moron
This isn’t about you. Stop taking it personal.
White executives tell A&Rs often that this music can’t be signed or isn’t a valuable because of the content. Therefore making it seem like music that isn’t being sold isn’t good when it’s the marketing.
When those same artist pop off they come running with contracts.
Literally no major label would sign kendrick or j Cole today.
Definitely with you on most of this besides the last sentence. However, the way you replied I think anyone would feel it was at least partially directed towards them. All good though not here to argue and def agree with majority of points you’re making
Streets saying Bad Bunny killed rap
Burna is most likely the culprit tbh, he got the power to control niggas.
The counterpoint would be…would it make a difference? Putting acts on the road again with interviews, promotional appearances, etc
Would it make a difference? I don’t think so lowkey
we'd never know cause they'd never try it lol
i have noticed popup signings coming back with like metro and the young thug release party that 300 did with the physicals but
something like that for the smaller top stars like polo/rod/durk would allow them to at least get that grip back
6 figures in sales is NOT the average for American rap artist. What?
for a mainstream rap artist it is

you telling me if artists like kendrick and cole - who by the way, made hits would not be signed today?
I don’t think so, those guys actually made consistent bodies of work. With radio play.
Don’t think labels are turning those guys down

Rightfully so that generation just wants to make money and to be able to provide. I don’t blame them for the hustle but man.. lol

Kendrick and Cole didn’t have hits when they signed.
And 1000 percent they are turning those guys down.
