It's pretty funny how much the modern NBA and Hip Hop suffer from similar issues.

The podcasts for hip hop and the NBA are generally trash and focus too much on drama, controversy, gossip, rivalries, GOAT rankings, and narratives/storylines.

Also, hardcore hip hop and NBA fans have both complained about how too many rappers and players are lacking passion and don't understand the fundamentals of the game.

I just find that very interesting.

So basically he’s saying HipHop is failing because we didn’t gate keep it enough which he has somewhat of a point but would HipHop have gotten to the top spot if it did?

100% bro which is why in sports I’ve removed most of the nonsense from my consumption and just enjoy the sports for what they are and form my own opinions. Again there is always room for discussion, disagreements s*** even having a hot take isn’t unfounded as long as it’s genuine. Lot of these people just in it for the money though so the plot is lost

There's collective blame to be shared around for the decline of hip hop.

The listeners, record labels, gatekeepers, radio, streaming services

It's okay for entertainment but it def ruined a lot of music and sports discourse on social media. There needs to be more balance.

Niggas got so many hot takes these days that the takes eventually become cold.

That's why I respect Comeback Jack(RIP) because, even when he had a hot take about Tupac(a mild one tbh) on his podcast and got roasted for it online, he actually made an account of one of those forums and had level headed discussions with those people. And, eventually, he clarified that he still thinks Tupac is a GOAT rapper and said that he should've worded it better on his podcast.

Nowadays, none of these new rap media personalities would ever do anything like that. They'll say a crazy ass hot take then double down on it and act like it's gospel. Niggas don't even know how to break down albums and describe them beyond "mid/trash/classic" anymore.

But I'm done with my soapbox lol. That's another topic in itself.

Why can no one explain what gatekeeping means when it comes to hip hop? Everyone on here is constantly talking about gate keeping hip hop but from who? How? What does that look like?

    Begging someone to explain

It's more or less just means quality control. So gatekeeping from subpar talent or people who looked at hip hop as a get rich a scheme more than an art form.

Since radio stations/blogs/shows/labele were the only real way to get recognize on a mainstream level, gatekeepers could just simply not give those people any cosign or a platform to use

But since the physical era is done with, there's practically no real way of gatekeeping lol since music is more direct than ever.

    I guess playlisting maybe
