Anybody hating on DS2 must not have played it on release because it was such a huge improvement in so many ways over DS1 and everybody in the community was loving it. Definitely the dark horse of the series
?????
DS2 was a disaster because of its development hell. Tanimura goated just for being able to ship a decent game out of the seeming disaster It was at one point. Still not as good as the rest tho. Worst bosses, worst level design, evil enemy placement, at times atrocious art direction. At least scholar fixed the story. Had the best build variety by far tho, and even that now has been surpassed by elden ring

And the DLC while not necessarily the best are fantasically unique imo

“Disaster” is an overstatement Jesus Christ lmao. Game has the largest variety of environments until Elden ring, it looked amazing compared to DS1, was a huge journey and felt like a proper adventure. Magic system was an upgrade from 1, massive amount of viable weapons and builds. POWER STANCE which they finally brought back with ER.
Don’t tell me worst bosses when DS1 had bed of chaos lmao Capra demon with dog gank. Enemy placement was not that bad but SOTFS made it way worse. Mirror Knight boss fight is a top 5 fight in the entire series. Story was fine and did not need SOTFS even if it did expand on the story it ruined lots of gameplay elements.
Even adaptability being tied to iframes isn’t really that big of a deal you just have to spend a few levels on it and because it’s a longer game you ended up a higher level cap than DS1 anyways

Yeah the dlcs do a lot of heavy lifting for the game. All 3, the bastille and iron keep are my favorite levels of the game
Beating Velstadt after a long journey and finding KING VENDRICK who’s been hyped as s*** all game just to see him a mindless pathetic hollow was crazyyyy and even then you still have so much game left

Yeah youre right, disaster was a bit too much hell i dont even agree with what i wrote lmfao, but i would say it was disappointing. They tried to make an elden ring but without the time, budget, team and generational auteur to lead the project. It still ended up a good game, but it has a lot of potential that was never explored. For example the variety of environments and its scale are remnants of that vision. But the areas dont have the intricacy and well thought out design of the prequel and sequels, the famous examples being iron keep being above earthen peak and the 1.5m tall fallen column that somehow prevents the player from reaching drangleic castle and forces them to fight 4 strong lords. Couldnt have put a 10m wall or terrain to make It more believable. But then you have also heide that despite looking beautiful Is a relatively short straight walk with one diramation that is another walk to the church. Then the route from shaded woods to the boss of tseldora Is another straight walk with some cool ideas but not enough clever level design. I think It has the best build variety without counting ER and i stated as such multiple times. Bed of Chaos is the worst boss from ever made, but dark souls has quelaag, Nito, O&S, artorias, manus, kalameet, Guardian, sif, gwyn. DS2 has only sir alonne, fume knight, sinh, verstdadt, arguably the mirror knight that can compete at that level, with none reaching o&s kalameet and artorias. Not to mention the plethora of Amazing bosses DS3 and ER have. And DS2 has garbage like royal rat authority, demon of song and covetous demon that arent Bed of Chaos but not that better either. Bosses are definitely DS2's weakest part. And capra demon is good, great DPS check before the arguably hardest areas of your first run and you can deal with the dogs in countless ways.
The story Is goodish enough on base game, but scholar adds aldia and dialogues with vendrick that add much needed nuance and context to things the base game didnt cover thoroughly.
Adaptability is trash, glad you liked It but for me its hell, how can you lock one of the 3 main combat mechanics behind leveling, especially since dark souls 2 has tracked animations (also ass imo for the type of game It is). To me the best way i can describe dark souls 2 Is by comparing DS2 and the dlc areas. DS2 is what we ended up with, the dlcs are what it could've been, and unfortunately 3 great areas can only save the game so much.
I agree that meeting vendrick in that state was the climax of the game and a memorable experience, but even then, compare it to gwyn or radagon. These 2 are also much better fights
Dark souls 2 is a solid 7, but i see elden ring and wonder what more time and focus couldve turned DS2 into
Bonfire ascetics are top 3 ideas of the series yes theyre great elden ring shouldve had something similar too!!
Also ds1 firelink shrine best hub

Fair points, DS2 definitely had a lot of ambition that didn’t all work out. I just feel like the hate is always overblown when it tries to do a lot, some of it works and some it…doesn’t.
Nah don’t get me wrong I don’t like ADP it’s a bad decision but I just don’t think it’s that big of a deal you just gotta invest a few levels in it.
Too many knight bosses for sure, pursuer is a cool idea as a “recurring boss.” And yeah level design was pretty bland compared to the interconnectedness of ds1.
Elden Ring is better in every way thankfully
Tomorrow colosseums, the day after dlc announcement
What if this IS the dlc and theres nothing more

Bamco always makes them do dlcs for their published games its downright impossible we wont get at least one dlc. Plus in-game s*** heavily suggests one, about a character in particular. And from always wants to do dlc for their games, they said they were working on a sekiro DLC until Activision asked for no dlcs, in fact malenia started from a dlc sekiro boss. So yeah, this Is a great update but hardly the only additional content we'll get
