I don't really understand the statement. He talks about music being written by computers, which I thought would be the basis for what he's saying...
But then he points to songwriter credits, and is categorizing songs that have multiple writers as "not real songs"? That's the part that doesn't make sense to me. Perhaps he meant the songs are made by too many people in order to call them "real songWRITERS" and he gives FJM and Conan as examples? otherwise I don't see his point.
I listened to that Conan Grey album by the way and...yeah. he should've picked someone else to highlight who doesn't collab much. idk. Finneas and Billie or something.
Let the man have an opinion, music is pretty trash nowadays with very few exceptions.
i just read the full quote and he's obviously not talking about hip hop.
He's mostly talking about UK music... and saying that there's nobody on the charts who can write a song without any help. he's objectively right there, and that is a shame that this era doesn't have big songwriters who are artists
i think you can argue that rappers like Kendrick are the modern version of that. In pop tho there are artists like Calvin Harris who still write on their own and people like Taylor used to. And you've got producer artists like Pharrell
this is facts..
he's always seemed as the most irrelevant out of his peers and the other "legends"... his discography is really forgettable
I mean he's not wrong
Of course teenagers in this thread are gonna be angry about this
what's your interpretation of what he means by "real songs" tho?

u guys are smoking crack
what's your interpretation of what he means by "real songs" tho?
i found the quote, he means songs written by the artist. that is a lot rarer in the charts than it was in his era. he means in the UK specifically too

ok so i did interpret it correctly. that's a fair observation but i mean...they're still real songs lol his word choice is interesting.
Elton got classics
idk about the UK pop scene (which is what it seems he's talking about) so I can't comment on his take on that, but I don't think its about hip hop considering how supportive he's been of it in the recent past
u lot are smoking crack, elton a bonafide legend
no one is doubting that, his discography is just the most forgettable out of his peers and for someone who is considered a legend

most of the songs on the top 50 on spotify have been there for more than 2 weeks 🤔
So? Most albums have lots of session musicians, he's a solo artist of course he has session musicians. the only few exceptions to that are people like Prince. That's like s***ting on James Brown or Curtis Mayfield for the same thing. They also came up in an era where you couldn't as easily play all the instruments on your album, who knows what approach they'd take now.
also in a live context Elton could easily hold down a whole set on his own, just voice and piano. like springsteen did the other year on broadway. i don't think session musicians detract from him at all.
but yeah, i agree some of his deep cuts aren't that memorable. but he probably has some of the most legendary pop/rock songs, and that he actually wrote them gives him legitimate legend status to me
