Any creatives want to explain the use case for bandcamp?
Iirc it’s a relic from a time when streaming platforms weren’t as prevalent or accessible
As an aside I found some great artists on there during the blog era
It’s not a relic, it had a resurgence in the last few years. It’s good if you have a fanbase to directly support you, Knxwledge puts most of his music out there exclusively. It’s really more about getting people to buy music than stream and feeling like you have more control than with Spotify or Apple. A lot of underground scenes are all about that more independent aspect and their fans support them on there
It’s not good for reaching casuals but if you’re a niche artist in the underground with a fanbase it’s good

That makes a lot of sense
I imagine one of those smaller artists with a super dedicated fanbase can really clean up on there
Probably makes for a more intimate fan artist relationship too

Easier to get paid, cleaner UI imo, not riddled with ads, isn’t buggy af, can sell merch and s*** through it, easier to connect to fans

it's a specific kind of fan who uses it for the most part, but you keep like 82% of your revenue or something like that. they also do Bandcamp Fridays the first friday of every month where fees are completely waived. they started it right when the pandemic started, I put a loosie on there and ended up making like $150 I was like oh s*** so I've kept uploading on there ever since. it's a cool idea, for me personally my fans don't use it much and it's only people who go out of their way to give me money and then like older relatives and stuff lol. but I think if u make like a less commercially friendly kind of music u can find a community on there
it's basically like a DIY indie version of the itunes store with more customizing and direct uploading
and you can sell merch

I remember even a decade ago how clean the ui was

Yes exactly. Like Knxwledge I mentioned, I assume he makes a great living just off putting beat tapes on bandcamp tbh. The slums scene also seems to thrive on there, people sell vinyls and stuff on there

That’s really cool. Probably makes sense for the dudes who are super engaged with a small but ultra loyal fanbase. Probably clean up with merch sales there too
I wonder what the purchase payout is for buying an album on there as opposed to Apple or Amazon music

exactly. I feel like dudes like mach hommy use it. or like when nip did that $100 album thing, he could've done that thru bandcamp (i dont think he did but that's like what the platform is for)
and as a listener, if ur the kind of listener who wants wav files or FLAC files for everything u like, and want ur own digital library non streaming, then it's a good platform for that
i cant speak to the comparison on the itunes store vs bandcamp because i have no idea if anyone has ever bought my s*** on itunes lol but if someone spends $20 on my bandcamp i prob get like $16
Damn this is scary I hope they don’t f*** up bandcamp. BC is the only place I’ve purchased my music for the last few years (physicals too)
Could see them doing something super stupid like changing it to a subscription based thing with ads and limits on how much you can upload if you don’t pay for “pro” (like SoundCloud)

Seems to be the case, almost every industry is shifting towards that model. Recurring revenue etc
Do they already incorporate streaming a La Spotify or is it straight purchase and then listen through the app (I know you can download the files too)
What is Sony gonna do with bandcamp after she acquires epic games?
Epic is owned by tencent they aint buying them
