Shawty in this ig reel makes a point in that in most other artistic fields, you do have to have a basic understanding of the field and the history behind it.

Meanwhile we almost take a joy out of dissing and disregarding our elders in music.

And it has lead to a saturation of artists that use this artform as a get rich scheme and nothing else.

    We need gatekeepers again mane.

Edit: STUDYING YOUR CRAFT DOES NOT MEAN LEARNING MUSIC THEORY.

Your rap fatalism blinds you to the fact that this kind of craven perversion of art for the sake of capitalism is consistent across nearly all mediums and genres that remain in vogue and profitable, to the point that it’s practically human nature

    Bad take

All you gotta do is listen to music. Which everybody does.

The consumer is the problem here not the artist.

Lmao it was a rapper or someone a few years ago who said niggas would look at you crazy if you just said one day “fuck it i just wanna join the NBA” but thats exactly how niggas do rap

Sadly, a lot of rappers openly don’t even listen to music and that’s a big problem

Although based somewhat in….other things , country didn’t play that s*** with lil nas x and shaboozey (not saying it was warranted)

Rap should have treated niggas who boldly dont take it serious the same way

Man if you don’t see 99.9999% of successful country artists as the most talentless hacks on the planet, idk what to tell you. They’re all bloodsuckers and fakes, Keith Urban is f***ing Australian

Maybe true maybe not but from my vantage point, aside from whatever unspoken racial boundaries, they’ve set the barrier to entry to country to at least be able to play the guitar and say coherent linear lyrics

We don’t have a parallel for that in rap lol or rather we lost it. It used to be there before 2016 xxl class or really lil b. However you felt bout anyone from charles hamilton to troy ave actual music everyone was trying to make sense and rap coherently and not treat rap like some troll performance art type s*** or “just vibe on the beat twin” lmao

All you need is a dope beat and sound good on the song. You don’t got to be saying s*** just sound good.

this is how we ended up with Carti & Travis being popular

  • Gatekeeping would never work and there are great artist of all ages. The record labels and media wont give them attention. The clickbait of Ian hate is easier. Accusations of cultural appropriation is easier than elevating artist we do love

The system of the public forming an hive mind that gets someone out of here or cancelled for attempting a genre isnt realistic and the attention of "cancel Ian cancel 69 dont listen to them" got them MORE listeners by far.

  • How did you read that and think the problem and solution is related to barriers of entry

Beethoven said he learned nothing from his teacher

who was the Beatles googling as a teenage garage band? they wasn’t, it was all self taught by ear

I watched my homie learn piano off just his ear in a year we gotta stop blaming the artist and blame the consumer

  • Most new rappers going to be content creators. They going to be a streamer and find out that streaming make you way more money than rapping.

But also op the elders talk down on the youngins

I honestly see nothing wrong with guys who can’t rap but end up doing some other s*** that pops. Carti is a really good example. He knows what he is doing while not doing a mf thing.

Why blame either here when the power lies with the label and media

cause the power ultimately lies with the people to decide what will become pushed to the forefront which is why TikTok and it’s genuineness in marketing took off so massively

The creation of algorithm-driven markets by users does not mean users control algorithmic content, even if their habits determine directions of the market.

Label bosses, digital capitalists, and board rooms are choosing what to buy into, what to boost, and what to cut off at the end of the day

there’s so many stars today that were literally built within fan led communities and message groups on Twitter and TikTok man, actually the majority of them are this way aside from like maybe the female rappers where for them it was the right trend got them signed to an indie. the label control isn’t what it used to be in my opinion especially last 8 years. they only now getting back in control by purchasing everything again
