That was a thing in middle school too. Claiming tourettes and slapping the homie in class

Whole south park episode on it. One of their best

  • People just want to have excuses for acting s***ty.

    autism the new introvert

  • I think it depends. Chris Chan is high functioning

You’re describing someone with OCD and social anxiety which is a lot different than autism

Social awkwardness especially in adults is autism. If you’re neurotypical communicating with people who aren’t outright hostile towards you is like breathing

  • OVO Steve Carell

    and wtf is neurodivergent ?

many ppl claim they have that s*** as well lately

We don’t use that word in the trenches

You do. Most don’t even have a diagnosis

This isnt uncommon for autistic people tho considering A) the stuff we’ve learned about autism and our ability to diagnose it is still relatively recent and B) not every parent has the resources to do testing/evaluations + some parents literally think autism is like a plague and shiver at the thought of their child having it. Those parents will shirk evaluations for their own peace of mind

  • I had to sit through coworkers trying to be quirky and blaming it on their “tisms” boy I oughtta

I think it is very uncommon to not have a diagnosis as an adult. Most of the symptoms are caught during elementary school age. Those people claiming autism as an adult without a diagnosis or even seeing a professional probably just have social anxiety or something similar.

  • Such a crazy thing to aspire to be.

Yes, but adults now were elementary school age when we were still thinking Asperger’s was a viable diagnosis. You can’t use that as a baseline when we didn’t have the knowledge we have now which only adds to our ability to identify it

  • What ‘you think’ also means very little when there’s plenty of adults who get diagnosed in adulthood because they didn’t have the resources when they were younger lol or because they were deemed as having Asperger’s which isn’t a thing anymore

You still would’ve been flagged for something throughout going to school. And by flagged I mean they would’ve noticed something about your behavior at some point with you going through school.

I’m sure there are some small percent that slip though the cracks but I don’t think yall understand how hard it is to be autistic and go through grades 1-12 plus college for some without being flagged by the school system or any dr.

Being flagged is not an autism diagnosis tho and it doesn’t magically guarantee one lol plenty of people slip by bro I work in the field with adults who have the same stories

  • Maybe in 20 years that logic will hold but you’re being purposefully ignorant of how research has made leaps and bounds in the last 5-10 years @op

  • I gotta lil touch o da tism. It is...interesting maneuvering life and work when you are made aware of it but you are high functioning.

  • And to act like our system isnt flawed and every kid who has autism is guaranteed diagnosed is also truly dangerous and ignorant thinking so idk if this thread is made in good faith and blind ignorance or it’s a bait thread at this point

I never said it was equal to a diagnosis but it shows that at some point the teachers or whoever saw that the kid was struggling for whatever reason.

And that doesn’t do anything for a child who has autism and doesn’t get diagnosed lol it just puts them in behaviorally challenged classrooms

I never said it did. All I’m saying is that even among people who get diagnosed as an adult with things like autism many of them had problems in school with focus or behavior

Yes that’s pretty obvious. It’s still not a guarantee that someone will be diagnosed lol + That’s ignoring the other points I made about people slipping through the cracks without a diagnosis and the factors behind it though.

Having a diagnosis or not is not a good barometer of being apart of a ‘fake autism wave’ for people over a certain age (or in general with America’s healthcare system) and that’s my whole problem with your original post I quoted.
