ElricFor someone who's got such a steady diet of new music yes that is heresy
you got to live with these albums for a while and let them color your life or they're never going to sink in like they should. I know you're weird about making sure you're listening very intently all of the time but sometimes you got to let it play in the background for it to sink in.if im really liking an album its always at least 10 during my first few months with it
for styles that im super familiar with like classic psych, heavy metal, hard rock i really feel like most of the albums can reveal their secrets in that many listens. also i meant thats really for my first round sitting with that album, the goal is always more listens than that but it might be in a few years down the line when my interest springs back up.
interest is the biggest thing to make me enjoy listening to new albums and I found letting an album be in my digestion pool for more than few months always just ends up in making listening to it feel like a chore. and for doing artists whole discographies i've been liking giving almost all the core albums a handful of listens while my interest is piqued, then falling in deeper love on a revisit like 2 years down the line.
like when I got deeper into Mingus I feel like getting a good taste of all the eras, like 15 albums worth will make revisiting in 2023 more potent than if I just spent 2 years on the first couple

theres just too much music im interested to listen in to not be switching things up. my first big country binge last year was very fruitful and i think i wouldve gotten more bored with it if I was just forcing myself to steadily listen to a Buck Owens album every single month even if I was busy thinking about 10 other big areas of music instead

Yeah I don’t listen to albums as much as you two. If I don’t like something after 2-3 listens there’s no way I’m gonna like after more. If I connect fully with something on the full listen I don’t see the point in relistens constantly. Life’s too short.

I'm sure we all have our own internal system of figuring out what's going to be worthwhile and what's not, taking into account how much your friends/critics etc regard something to judge whether you want to keep attempting it. After a few intent listens I like to just have something play in the background and see what it feels like to literally live with the music for a while. Obviously we're going through so much stuff a lot of stuff gets left out of rotation pretty quickly but you always end up going back to find out what you're missing. Sometimes a fancy shiny new album will come out and that will distract me for a while but that happens less and less these days.

im kinda interested to try your method for a little while tbh. i know you dont plan it out as much as me but
during like a 2 month period, how many albums would you say are in your digestion rotation and how often do you listen to them?
and how do you decide what to listen to if you dont plan it out, do you just have a big list and pick what youre feeling and make sure not to totally neglect any?

I can see that if you really get into the social aspect I guess. I barely do anything with mine it just logs what I listen to on spotify.

I don't know about you but there's no way in hell I'm going to learn to appreciate these 50 classic George Jones albums if I don't actually marinate on them. I'm not in a race to skim a bunch of quality music. We're probably built different.

If nothing connects with me after a first listen, I’m rarely re-visiting unless my mind gets changed somehow down the line. There’s a lot of great albums I did not like the first time I heard them that have gone on to be in my Top 100.

I don't know about you but there's no way in hell I'm going to learn to appreciate these 50 classic George Jones albums if I don't actually marinate on them. I'm not in a race to skim a bunch of quality music. We're probably built different.
tbh my country phase a year ago was mostly just planting the seeds for the next one and the 3rd one after that. knew anything wasnt gonna become an all time favorite yet so was just getting a foundation
think i just went through my 2nd big jazz phase recently, I don't think I understand all of Coltrane yet but in my next big burst I can see it all clicking even more all at once

If I dont connect with it at all I wont bother with it again and that goes for not just music, but anything. If it peaks my interest even a little bit though I'll definitely revisit it at some point.
