I still maintain that Ricky Gervais has some of the best delivery in the world, but he rarely says anything funny any more cause he seems to he on some bizarre personal crusade against trans people. It comes across as, at best, deeply weird

She established a massive base of power then revealed her true nature. She's like the Emperor Palpatine of children's books.

tbh i dont consider the people that try and shut down comedy shows for "harmful" jokes as the left...its something different. and I hate how valid ideas like universal healthcare, wall street regulation, labor organization etc. gets mixed up with the "woke" (for want of a better word) stuff when people talk about the left in America. Because that stuff is palatable to wide swathes of the population but people get so turned off by the more visible anti-comedy/art stuff. super unfortunate IMO

I really don’t feel anything malicious from Chappelle’s jokes. They're pretty tame, but I’m not familiar with Gervais’s new material on the subject. I think generally in another 5 or so years people will look back on this as just the hot button issue of the time and feel less strongly about the comedy in response to it.

Of course these are important distinctions but it’s getting pretty bad. There’s people who have power in these circles who normally claim to be representations of the “real left” but when it comes down to it they’re pressured into being indistinguishable from the people manufacturing the distractions they criticize. After Bernie lost a second time, I think the left became really fractured.

Well I dont agree with trying to censor him or shut down his shows. But then again it's their theater so they can do whatever they want. My point is more against the people that try to act like he isn't saying some negative s***, cause he clearly is

yea, and there is a lot of fear of losing audience/platform. there are people who know better and im sure express certain things in private that they would never express in public for fear of a greenwald style backlash.

the american left has never really been extremely organized or visible on the national stage (compared to European countries for instance). I hope I'm wrong but that Bernie coalition feels more and more like an anomaly that won't be replicated in future election cycles...i don't know, its hard to predict the future.

well, he's talking about a massive societal movement that is challenging a lot of longtime norms and values. when large shifts in the zeitgeist like this occur its not "negative" to comment on and criticize aspects of the movement. especially in the context of a comedy show, which shouldn't be taken seriously, because its jokes.

I gotcha but we all used to understand that everybody had their thing and we will all be hypocritical at some point by complaining about our thing or our line in the sand while laughing at other people’s thing so it’s better collectively to just acknowledge the medium of comedy relies on discomfort to work. It’s pushing you to an edge and then winning you over. My favorite thing is watching a comedian almost lose an audience with something and then reeling them back for a huge laugh. You need to address the current issues that make people look around the room to see if it’s okay to laugh to do that effectively.

I did. she makes PR blunders a lot like this IMO to appeal to her "socially progressive" base...despite that i'm pretty reluctant to criticize her too much, she is as close as it gets to someone with my views on economics and labor in national office, so i try and support her despite those obvious blunders that she makes (jan 6th Ig live stuff was another one)

Sure he's commenting on a massive societal movement and he's going about it in a s***headed insulting way a lot of the time, and a lot of it seems spiteful and ego-fueled at this point.

It's not even about hurt feelings or any of that s***, I just think it's an obvious thing that a lot of people try to ignore for whatever reason

I wish I was still with you on this one but at this point I just think she’s a cynical careerist. The Met Gala tax the rich dress was when I realized this fully. Leftism to her is just aesthetics for her brand. Still I support whatever positive economic legislation she attempts to push for.

i feel you. i think people take that s*** too personally, i don't think chappelle hates trans people or wants them to die or any of the accusations he gets saddled with. (unlike JK rowling, who is way more vitriolic and evil)...you can criticize the movement without it automatically being "denying people the right to exist"

Well that's the thing, I don't feel like whatever point he's trying to make, if there is one, is working. And most of the jokes aren't even funny. It's just an out of touch dude ranting.
