Zodiac is one of the best films I’ve ever seen tbh

I also love Gone Girl, Benjamin Button, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Social Network and Se7en

Tbh kind of weird to hate on him. He’s one of the best American filmmakers. Wouldn’t say there is a single bland or safe detail in his work. He’s the one inventing waves, not following em (In his major works anyway )

This whole thread really loves Zodiac that much, huh? I saw that and Enemy around the same time and thought Zodiac was basically a slightly less interesting version of Enemy. Maybe I need to re-watch it.

Yeah I thought Enemy was extremely mid so idk. But i tend to not care at all for those kinds of cryptic symbolic films.

Don’t think the movie cares either

It’s more about our generation than Facebook. And it’s still one of the greatest screenplays in cinema.

Idk, both are about mans unquenchable desire to meet the “other” - to know what isn’t meant to be known, and the destruction that leads to when someone strays too far down that path.

At least that was the connection I made. I just thought Enemy explored that theme better.

Yeah the screenplay is insanely good. I just wish he would step out of his comfort zone a bit on a film in the future

I think the difference though is that Enemy is only about that and it’s more about that theme than the concepts it plays with whereas Zodiac puts so much detail and care into its world and its concept and the procedural oriented storytelling feels authentic.

I hate filmmakers that only care about the message and not the ideas and Enemy was pretty much all message wrapped up in its cryptic “symbolism”

He had a chance with world war Z. But I think every director has a style that is never going to change no matter what genres or gimmicks they pull in their films. Fincher has played with other genres before though like with Benjamin Button or TSN compared to his usual twist oriented thrillers

It pretty much is. Can’t really think of a film that better encapsulates our nihilist attitude towards everything as a result of the progression of technology

the only intriguing aspect The Social Network is the message that we're all voyeura and love to judge and mock other people and that being a good business model. Otherwise it's a pretty run of the mill big successful business man becones too greedy and selfish and therefore pushes everyone away story without the visuals of a TWBB or the story structure of a Citizen Kane (Kane is also a far more complex character. ). It's alright I guess. the pacing is nice.

Compare that to the other Fincher films in terms of story and style. It's his blandest film imo

Enemy is Villeneuve’s best imo. Bladerunner 2049 surprised the hell out of me but it’s still not touching the original. It falls into the same tendencies most elevated genre cinema does. It’s cold, detached, clinical, and it’s visual style is simply hard harsh colors. That being said it still ends up working overall. It also tackles modern male alienation really well.
