Just watched Malcolm x for the first time. Holy s*** that movie was gigantic. Just scale wise it was crazy seeing a Spike biopic of Malcolm on like godfather 2, titanic scale. Even kinda reminded me of Lord of the rings just in terms of how much happened and how many elaborate sets and sequences were packed in

People rail against woke diversity pandering stuff but it sucks in the 30+ years since the movie came out, there’s been barely any black directors allowed the chance for their movie to touch the same scale or reached those huge heights of a Spielberg, Ridley Scott, Laurence of Arabi, James Cameron type sweeping epic that Malcolm X is

Mind you, Spike had to fight tooth and nail to get this movie made. Contributed over half of his own salary to get it funded. Prince, Michael Jordan, Tracy Chapman, Oprah and many more black celebrities contributed to the film’s production. And we’re talking about a film that’s budget ended up totaling only $35million (which may or may not have been a lot for the time but we’re talking about one of the most prolific people in history). Warner Bros didn’t want to give him anything over 28 mil. It didn’t help that many (white) people weren’t too enthused about a biopic being made about Malcolm X in the first place. This had to be one of the greatest undertakings for a director in Spike’s position. It’s a miracle that it even got released, let alone it being Spike’s full vision realized. Let alone it being UNSURPRISINGLY really f***ing amazing with an all time performance from Denzel who doesn’t even look a lick like Malcolm but completely transforms into the role.

I don’t know, the more I think about it, the more I feel this one of the most important films of our time.

Always amazing to hear how these directors scrapped together everything they could to get movies like these made AND also have them hold a lasting resonance where people like me were able to grow up watching them. Having a real vision like that for any length of time is incredible!

Too many classics that are better than sorry to bother you. It’s a really good movie tho.
