ehh it's a staple of most noir films, but looking from this list and others: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listof_film_noir_titles#Precursors/_early_noir-like_films

Le Samourai is more cool as Le Cercle Rouge.

Le Doulos is cool too like Jean-Paul Belmondo

Haven't seen Le Samourai. I have seen Bob the Gangster though. That and Becker's Hands Off the Loot are both wonderful. Bertolucci's The Conformist is still prob my favorite non-english noir.

bob le flambeur's ending lowkey anti climactic af. touchez pas au grisbi is cool too, kinda overlooked imo

my ranking of melville noir/policiers films: le samouraï, le doulos, le deuxième souffle, le cercle rouge, bob le flambeur and un flic (more policier than noir imo). they're all great to watch tho

I think that's kind of the point. It's very understated and subdued for a gangster film. Just a very different energy than American or Japanese mob flicks of the time.

    you're definitely right.

it's a great film and the influence it had on the early 60s new wave (particularly à bout de souffle) is strong.
the way he captures the milieu of montmarte from that time is terrific. altho i kinda saw the end coming i was slightly disappointed, enjoyed the ending of subsequent films a bit more.

ending even goes back to the first scenes and even the title (the gambler). bad luck when gambling at first and also in the ending. took a gamble and lost.

i don't know why but for some reason melville hated bob le flambeur later on

gonna borrow that ginette vincendeau melville book from the library again and say i lost it and pay the damn flat fee. it's not available for sale here
