a few projects i've worked on as creative director
got to work on my first feature this year as a title designer. premiered in a film festival a month ago. hoping for wide release in the next year.
Not really
I make films with 8mm cameras
They all have fixed lens... that was the joke. Don’t pull up in here derailing s*** for no reason there is no cookie cutter way to going about making your art, your tools are only worth what you can do with them
terrible idea
Not really but to avoid s***ting this thread up with arguing imma leave it at that
Don’t just drop in talking about “bad idea” if you not going to give these boys a reason as to why they should make other investments

didn't realize you were talking film cameras. that's my bad.
for digital it's truly not a good idea. investing in glass especially vintage is a great investment if you can pull focus manually. you can use mounts to adapt from older formats to new ones.
not trying to derail the thread at all. just trying to save people money who shoot digital

I see
Well I’m anti digital and advocate film so I’ll never work with a digital camera but your videos you posted look great
Working with 8mm and 16mm might not be as cost efficient but the cameras themselves are inexpensive virtually and you don’t have the trouble of owning multiple expensive lens like with a digital camera
But film stock costs add up before you realize it I’ve spent $600 this year alone on unused rolls
@Bane yup, classic movie
Why?
It is! Just popped into my head when you said you wanted to document your life, lmao.

ah gotcha. i actually shoot a lot of 35mm stills, but always shoot digitally for video.
but yeah the cost of film adds up just doing that casually so i can imagine how expensive that gets for video
curious, how do you edit?
My ex owns an URSA mini pro with lens and mount that’s about a $14000 investment
I’ve handled that camera once and want nothing to do with digital only cameras honestly
Kinda intimidated me

If you mean which softwares I use, avid media composer and Final Cut Pro
I have external devices used for audio editing and mixing
And sometimes I manually handle the celluloid for more archaic methods of editing but I’m terrible at that

yeah, i'm just interested in your process. i don't know anyone who shoots on film and wasn't sure if you went full a***og with your edit too.
in response to your other post the cost of the high end digital rigs is wild.
just need to have insurance though and you'll be good
there's obviously certain things that kind of equipment can achieve, but gear is always secondary to ideas and execution at the end of the day

Would love to do something like bust out a flatbed and do some editing and have film all over my room like a boss
Digital editing way easier since I had prior experience with those tools. Also not gonna act like I’m experienced enough to do s*** like full a***og. When it comes to shooting techniques like double exposure that’s one thing but I’m not a god like experimental filmmakers Peter Tscherkassky and Kenneth Anger who did some otherworldly things with film.
No hate against digital, it just doesn’t suit my intended aesthetic for now. Of course plenty of amazing things have been created thanks to digital filmmaking (Zodiac ) but I’m mostly trying to make movies less suited for it, by which I mean, aren’t worth the investment for all the gear. Maybe if I ever wanted to make a feature length movie but that ain’t gonna happen since I only wanna make shorts

yeah i've spent time in darkrooms for still edits but just don't think i'd have the patience to do a film full a***og in that sort of way.
and no hate to film either. i think it's sick that you are it tbh. i'm not hip to tscherkassky or anger so will definitely check out their work
you can do amazing things with film. the stargate sequence in 2001 still blows me away.
and i love the quality of warhol's screen tests. just to name a few moments that come to mind.
for the projects i've worked on digital has just made sense for what we were doing. i also want to be in a place where new technologies and techniques are being explored in the digital realm in the future.
This might be a dumb question but when you guys want to direct a film do you plan how all the camera angles of every scene should be or do you do that when you're on set. I just want to be hella prepared for the first film I'm directing

This is a dry but pretty detailed look at a process
It's a calarts instructor going step by step thru how to think about direction, camera movement and placement etc etc

I’m not really a director yet, but yes I do think about angles and camera movement all the time.
The more you prepare the easier the shoot will be.

did a shoot without doing this recently it was a nightmare and i regret not doing it

Wow. It's just that I was thinking do directors actually plan out every single shot in a movie because that would be crazy

Straight from the video: "Filmmaking is a battle... and like any battle, you have a battle plan. A plan that you know will have to come against obstacles and problems you have to cope with. Or opportunities you can seize. There is no real difference between planning carefully and improvisation. A director is always improvising."
If you have the opportunity to rehearse and board, it's best to come with some concrete ideas minute zero. Then you have the luxury to iterate towards even better executions.
Tired of shooting on super 8 tbh I’ve made two so far one video essay one short film w an actual story
Thinkin bout goin digital anyone have a black magic cinema pocket pro??

My friend of whom we’ve done a couple concerts and weddings with has the 4K one. He likes it but I’ve only seen his footage w/ a canon c100.
Overall based on the reviews, it’s a solid camera. Unsure of the rolling shutter tho.
