This literally has Devil May Cry combat lol. I don't see how that is appealing to the West. The art direction and setting are straight out of the Matsuno games, 1-6, and XIV. In another post you mentioned how you "want the series to go back to its roots." Well, the setting, writing, and art direction in this game are ALL harkening back to the roots of FF1-6 (especially 3 and Tactics). Doesn't get more "back to the roots" than that.

If it doesn't appeal to you or remind you of 7-13 that's fine. You don't gotta conjure up reasons binded in falsehoods for why, just say it doesn't vibe with you lol. It sounds like you want menu based combat and are trying to come up with additional reasons why you don't vibe with it beyond that, cuz this is as "back to the roots" as single player FF has been in everything EXCEPT menu based combat in like 25 years.

Looking at this game all I see are Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Devil May Cry, and Godzilla lol. FFT, Tactics Ogre, and GoT are similar because they have the same core influences. That emphasis on Euro-style medieval politics with high fantasy elements, characters coming from different houses, family scheming, etc. is present in all of those properties. The people making this game are MASSIVE Tactics Ogre/FFT stans. They likely took inspiration from GoT for how to evolve those games into a cinematic experience, but Matsuno (and Maehiro by extension) have been working with stories like Game of Thrones before Game of Thrones even existed -- with this SAME art direction, narrative style, etc. Minagawa was even the art director of Tactics Ogre and he's the art director here. Maehiro was Matsuno's disciple and he's the Creative Director here. Yoshi-P is a self proclaimed Matsuno worshipper and he's the Producer here. This s*** is so Matsuno it f***ing stinks like the dude took a s*** in a portapotty.

I think you're misunderstanding... pretty much everything lol. FF has always done things to appeal to a mass market... it's the biggest JRPG series on Earth besides Pokemon. The point is that none of this is "new" to FF. None of what they stated is an attempt to reach a western market. It has been present in FF for decades. This isn't some selling out of the series in an attempt to sell units. This is FF going back and revisiting what it was doing over 30 years ago with DMC combat (re: extremely Japanese-style character action style) on top.

yeah, i hate media attention like that. as far as i can tell a director having their team view certain media is pretty common place. kind of weird to focus on it since they probably had to also play the tactics series as well as read some dark fantasy novels, but idk. i just feel like lisa being pretty reactionary to a game they haven’t played, but i was tweaking in the mgs forums earlier so who am i to judge
