I had no idea that this game would have Game of Thrones inspiration
I’m even more hype now
The previews have been almost universally blown away by the story in a way that we haven’t seen from the single player games since like, X maybe. I loved Heavensward and can’t wait to see what Maehiro can do with a brand new world with no baggage.
For all this talk about its GoT influence, they’ve mentioned Attack on Titan, Godzilla and classic Tokusatsu in general as big points of reference. Koji talks about it in depth in the video below. You can tell this team really understands what the essence of FF is. Aesthetics and specifics aside it’ll still be a sincere game about hope and humanity that draws from several different global media scenes and tells a progressively more and more batshit story while pushing its genre forward in some way or other. With chocobos and crystals.
These games are always so fascinating to really break down on a textual and especially metatextual level imo more so than most other AAA games. Being the biggest JRPG franchise globally, it doesn’t have the luxury to just be good on its own. FF has the burden of being having the best graphics in the east, groundbreaking gameplay, and, for the sake of “keeping identity,” taking concepts that were around in the NES era and stretching them so far past their limits that they can STILL draw tears from players 35 years later. They have to reinvent literal 8-bit era story beats to be on par with the best of the best. I can’t think of another series with this kind of baggage.
!https://youtu.be/_zUKx44AQXASakaguchi himself said that Final Fantasy can be anything and this development team clearly understands that the series is moreso defined by certain narrative and thematic elements like you mentioned rather than any single combat system or setting or whatever other arbitrary criteria some backward-ass fans think it should adhere to.
I think one of Final Fantasy's greatest strengths is how its long history as an anthology series allows for each game to textually relate to the others in a more interesting way than direct sequels do. It facilitates these incredibly thoughtful explorations of series conventions like Shadowbringers and Endwalker (I pray Ishikawa gets to write her own mainline Final Fantasy game one day), but it also allows for cool little things like Ifrit being elevated from its traditional role as the weakest summon in the series to this rabid demon dog that gets to beat up all the other Eikons in XVI.
yeah, i hate media attention like that. as far as i can tell a director having their team view certain media is pretty common place. kind of weird to focus on it since they probably had to also play the tactics series as well as read some dark fantasy novels, but idk. i just feel like lisa being pretty reactionary to a game they haven’t played, but i was tweaking in the mgs forums earlier so who am i to judge
Also if you're going to make a AAA game inspired by Matsuno's works the obvious place to look would be Game of Thrones lmao. It's a super cinematic version of it.

yeah idk, i just don’t appreciate wild swings of assumption that are directly incongruous with the words and actions of the producer. i was mostly set off by the phrase grossly pandering (or whatever he said, im not going back to check)

Exceptional first few series. With disgusting s***scenes and unreal murders and battles which leave you stunned.
To be ruined by a s***e ending.
GOT x FF16…
It better not be

I mean I’d imagine they weren’t inspired by a bad ending lol
The tone, character interactions and world building is probably what they took most inspiration from
Those hard mode difficulty trials and the remixed enemies sounds amazing

Would rather have this stuff available to choose without having to do NG+
So better enemy AI, more difficult enemy spawns, and final chronolith trials are all locked to NG+. Just let us have FF mode as a base game option.
NG+ should just be you replaying the game with things carried over from your clear file.

It's sad you even have to say that

It's probably not balanced around the rate of skill acquisition in the first playthrough. Probably feels like s*** playing on that difficulty when you only have access to one Eikon.
Suzuki knows what he's doing

Having to play a game twice
I played infinite on 99 mode first play through loved it but they know what they doing I guess .
Wish they went more Beserk and less Game of Thrones but who knows maybe they went both
Yeah, Ludwig basically said as much yesterday.
This is the best way to market in the modern era
Oh we're getting a demo drop
Guess that'll determine if I preorder

just play it, we’ve gone too far with speculation
Washington Post “I actually forgot a few times that I wasn’t playing a new Devil May Cry game, a series I know and understand intimately. Final Fantasy XVI is basically a new DMC game told thru a story about relationships and palace intrigue. Clive even runs like Dante, speeds up his run the longer you move, similar to Devil May Cry’s characters.”

I'm playing DMC5 because of this lol. It's available for free on PS+. I mean, just watch:

Oh yeah I’m going to play just feel I will have a better idea after playing demo and devil may cry
This is going to be in my top 3 FF of all time, unless they just completely fumble the bag in some area we haven’t seen yet.

Doubt 16 will be on that list. This will be Devil May Cry: Game of Thrones.
And more derivative and surface level GoT at that.

fr this s*** looks like complete angsty asscheeks, why are mfs hyped for this

"Why are people hyped for a game by the 2nd best writer in FF's history and the disciple of the best writer in FF's history, one of the lead designers of the best character action game of all time, and the producer responsible for arguably the best FF of all time."
Super puzzling
