They were legit like:
Honestly, I kinda respect it.
Good, fans don’t even know what they want 99% of the time everyone thinks they’re an expert
Lol is it? What do you mean
playable characters/party members having action dependent dialogue that gets spammed 10000 times during a playthrough because you perform the same actions so often is a staple of the genre
this dialogue in japanese is hard etched into my brain and is never leaving

I understand your sentiments. I’d probably feel the same if I was heavily into JRPGs.
I’ve kept everything I know about this game limited. All I know is it’s supposed to be pretty dark. I’ve vaguely watched every trailer and honestly I remember nothing from them. Keeping it like this so I can go into this completely fresh
Love that Yoshida said that the JRPG label is bullshit that most people don't even use in Japan. Makes sense because what most ppl identify as "JRPG elements" are straight out of Wizardry and Ultima, two western games. JRPG doesn't mean anything.

Yeah he has that "I'm too old for your bullshit" energy and it's refreshing

Legit there's not one element unique to RPGs in Japan that aren't/weren't present in western RPGs before it. Regional labels in games make no sense. They're all RPGs. I don't know what other genre is subject to this type of divide based on what essentially amounts to aesthetics alone. Mortal Kombat and DB Fighterz are both just called fighting games.
Don’t know if I want this, Diablo 4, or street fighter 6 more.
Take this over those
So in this game do we make choices? Like in Mass Effect for example during dialogue (renegade and paragorn for example)

No.
What if Clive is the one doing it though? And the game includes a God of War style QTE during the act?
Could you step into such a role and see it through to its conclusion?
crying you sick
This is going to be in my top 3 FF of all time, unless they just completely fumble the bag in some area we haven’t seen yet.
IX
VI
XVI
remember that labyrinth level on FF15 with the stupid robots who jumpscared you, that s*** was HORRIBLE

XV had so much potential and fell so short of it. Development hell screwed that game.
Do you feel they may drop the ball with FF7rebirth? When was the last time they made two FF mainline games back to back? They usually took years to produce just one. I’m hype for this but I just want Rebirth to be special
Also, can someone confirm if this is just button mashing with just Eikons being the variety to combos? After hearing it’s just one button mapped for attack, it made me feel the combat won’t be as robust like a DMC game
Damn, I wonder if there are any reviewers who had to juggle this, Diablo and SF at the same time?

was the first FF i really got into so it still holds a special place in my heart. it obviously has a lot of flaws tho, but overall i really liked it

It's two completely different teams so no worries there

It's technically two buttons for attacks (you're supposed to use square and triangle to switch between melee and magic mid combo) with stuff like holding square/triangle to augment attacks and I think a few simple directional inputs (holding forward for lunge) but there's a lot of depth with the Eikon abilities and how they're used. Some blend seamlessly into other abilities, you can parry enemy attacks with them, sword parries are in this just like DMC, there's jump canceling, etc. Some abilities are different based on enemy context like how much stagger they have, if you're airborne, if the enemy is attacking you, etc
It won't reach the heights of DMC in terms of complexity (nothing does) but it strikes a really good balance between KH and DMC from what we've seen so far. Previews are extremely positive for it, too

Appreciate you answering both my questions. I was afraid to watch more previews because it seems they are just showing too much at this point, and if the combat wasn’t going to have much progression then I felt I spoiled most of the entertainment. I have big hopes for this one to be better than FF15 but so confused why it feels like they revealed 75% of the game already lol

Yea if you've avoided previews I suggest just avoiding all of them. There seems to be a ton of progression though with unlocking abilities and leveling them up and stuff. Lots of room for player expression for sure which was a point of emphasis for Suzuki (combat designer, was a lead combat designer on DMC5) according to interviews. There's a demo coming in a few weeks but it'll be the beginning of the game so skill will still be limited.
I have big hopes for this one too since XIV is probably my favorite FF game and all the people working on this are f***in superstars, really (unlike XV which was a ragtag group for the most part). Feels weird to be able to confident in an FF story and combat after XIII and XV but Maehiro (writer, creative director) and Suzuki (combat designer) are both GOATs.
It does feel like they've shown a lot but CBU3 (the team working on this game) is REALLY good at showing deceptive footage. They've been trolling the XIV fanbase with trailers like that for like 10 years lol. Like the Endwalker trailers, everyone thought they showed WAAAY too much and they legit only showed like the intro of the expansion.

I mean we can try to feign ignorance and give people the run around and try to act like people are seeing illusionary patterns but I think it’s very clear how Dragon Quest is still a JRPG and FF no longer is. And both of those come from Square. And you can pinpoint the exact moment where FF was too far away from DQ to consider them the same type of game.
I think it’s very clear how the Y’s series is action JRPG but Bayonetta and DMC are simply action games. Despite them all coming out of Japanese studios. Is FF 16 close to Bayo and DMC or Y’s? I think it’s very clear.
All of this “JRPG is a fake label” discourse is extremely disingenuous and mostly boils down to FF making excuses for why it’s no longer FF.

Elaborate. How is Dragon Quest a JRPG and FF isn't? What are the critical aspects of a JRPG that are present in every JRPG and are unique to JRPGs that are absent in FFXVI? They're both RPGs. Ys and Kingdom Hearts are just as far from Dragon Quest as XVI is lol. And please spare me the "controllable party" crap. We literally have Ys titles without a controllable party that are action RPGs. Are those not JRPGs? What about Vagrant Story? Dragon Quest 1 didn't even have one!
XVI combat is unironically closer to Ys than it is to DMC lmao. Skills tied to face buttons, combos are one button prompts. Aesthetically it's closer to DMC because of how visceral it is but in execution it's Ys as f***.
Kitase and Sakaguchi -- the only two people on Earth qualified to define what FF is or isn't -- directly contradict the last part of your post. If you think FFXVI "isn't FF," not only are you categorically wrong in both the eyes of the two biggest stewards of the series, but you're showing ignorance about the history of the series. This is the most FF-ass FF in 20 years. Truth is people said the exact same s*** you're saying about FFVII, FFVIII, FFX, FFXI, FFXII, FFXIII, FFXV. It's the same song and dance every time.
FFVII for being too modern in setting. FFVIII for the same s*** and being "too anime." FFX for being linear and no real world map. FFXI for being an MMO. FFXII because of the Gambit system. FFXIII for being linear, no world map, and the massive shift to the combat system. FFXV for being an action game. Now it's FFXVI for being an action game... despite it being closer in tone and narrative style to FF1-6 + Tactics than anything in 7-15 (except IX, really).
