It's a role playing game to a T
Multiple playable characters but yes I’d say Nier automata is a JRPG. As are Tales and Y’s. All have multiple playable characters at the very least.
Even in DMC and Bayonetta we have multiple characters but even those aren’t considered JRPGs.
FF16 is just the Clive show
If FFXVI takes Clive away and lets us play half of the game as Jill, will it be a JRPG then?

Big difference between RPG and JRPG. Skyrim isn’t a JRPG. That’s what Elden ring is

Sure. As long as they had their own stats, skill tree, customizable equipment and stuff
FF 7 remake is still a JRPG

Well XVI has those things and there are JRPGs without a party. Your criteria seems really arbitrary and inconsistent
Why are we limiting it to "character action games"? Vagrant Story had a solo playable character. The original Dragon Quest. Parasite Eve. FFXIII Lightning Returns. All the Rune Factory games. There's more I can list if you want lol. Mega Man Battle Network.
Just define what a JRPG is bro. It's real simple
Lol just realized u mentioned Ys. Oath in Felghana and Origins are 1 character and so are some of the other ones.
they wanna say turn based combat system sooo baddd
Day 500 of the jrpg discussion
Well they refuse to answer any time they get stumped so
I want to play it during weekend but okay
I don't make the rules. Tomorrow is Rebirth day.
i genuinely don’t care if it’s a jrpg anymore, f*** it
Thread reached epiphany
Man I love the character banter so much XV had really good party dialogue too.
I get the impression you’re gonna spend a LOT of time with Jill and Cid, like more than just a couple zones

i’m hoping to hang with them for at least a third of the game

Same. And I want them to have a lot to say about the side quests you pick up in an area like Nier Replicant. There’s so much potential for fun character moments.
The Japanese footage looks one million times better holy f***. He was downing enemies way faster. The damage sponge thing might just be a skill issue

The dungeon. In the jp video the player combines eikon abilities and uses stuff we don’t see in the eng footage like revolving fireballs and an AoE tackle ability

Ppl said same thing about sponginess when 7R was shown off.
It's a skill issue. Suzuki knows what he doin + previews said they're pretty sure enemy HP/defenses are tuned up in trailers cuz they were rolling enemies

On that second point part of why I was never too worried about spongy enemies is because this Suzuki guy surely knows what good or bad combat feels like

The developers have said that Jill is a secondary protagonist and she appears on the key art with Clive and Joshua as well. She's probably the party member that will stick around the longest besides Torgal.
