Week 4 Over The Rainbow:
Mad Max Fury Road: Black & Chrome Edition (2015)

Bit of a cop out ngl but I’ve always been curious about this version and I wanted to rewatch this after seeing Furiosa last week.

I asked myself “What would a Black and Chrome version of such a starkly colorful movie even bring?” What I got was the same fantastic movie that at points is even more gorgeous and haunting than the the normal edit. Honestly surprised how much this version elevates some of the visuals and performances.

And yeah I would have asked myself the same thing, this film thrives partly because of its bold use of colors.. so interesting to hear that it still holds up in black and white

I was iffy on it until the plot began kicking into gear. I was completely sold on it when Max wakes up in the aftermath of driving through the storm. There’s this other worldly quality to it that adds to all the craziness and the barren scenery of the desert I didn’t expect to work.

Idk if I prefer it to the normal version but I did like it a lot. It’s on Max if you ever get curious

week 5: once upon a time...this morning by bhandit rittakol

honestly as much of a stan i am of apichatpong and anocha, thai cinema is a relatively big blindspot for me, especially pre-2000s. so this one recently came up on my radar and i had it in the chamber to watch so it lined up with this week's pick. hadn't even heard of bhandit prior to catching wind of this film, just thought the name seemed interesting and it was from the 90s so i went in blind. formally traditional and plot heavy but so heartfelt every step of the way that it just feels undeniable, tragically beautiful little film

love the structure of this and how it navigates the central plot so gently as the different pieces of the puzzle slowly drop into place, and even with the bigger picture created in your head, youre still left to doubt and ponder over whether its the truth or not. lovely film

Black Swan (2010) | 5/5

not too familiar with Aronofsky but i think this is a perfect thriller movie. feels both parts cerebral and sexy and though straightforward in its story and its symbolism, even when you already know where its going it still shocks and brings you into the main characters psyche up until the end. Portman and Kunis are perfectly cast in this one. also i love the shooting during the recitals and performances, almost seems like they are just showing off shooting in front of the big ass mirrors like that. the mirror shots in this are mesmerizing.

i really wanted to like this one more than i did. as someone who grew up entirely online and attached to the internet the feeling was all too familiar of wanting so desperately to fit in that you'll just straight up lie about your life and surroundings and pretend to see changes you aren't. I loved the style and direction of the movie but just wish it did a little more with the plot. really captures that digital loneliness perfectly, surrounded by countless people online but unless you're fit into that specific group you long for and that perfect touch of acceptance it wont be enough for you. pretending to feel something, pretending that you knew you were pretending to begin with, etc. anyway i loved the style and the idea of the movie but felt the plot could have gone further. will give it props for making internet lore/creepypasta style videos that seem entirely believable.

Week 5: New Territory

I was gonna use Minus One but turns out he directed that Your Journey Dragon Quest movie on Netflix that I watched. I hoped I’d be able to fit another movie in this week as my pick but oh well this has been on my watchlist for the year.

I posted my thoughts in the thread for the movie but to reiterate: I really liked the set up and first half it started to lose me by the end and not because of the surrealism. I didn’t mind that actually. It was mostly when we got to the point where we’re following Kirsten Stewart kill a cop and hunt her father down to save her damsel in distress body builder girlfriend from how it started I was sitting there like how did we get here lol. I didn’t hate it though it was entertaining
