in before the update
Week 5 - Happy as Lazarro (2018) by Alice Rohrwacher
family drama taking place in Italy. with some touches of humor and magical realism, the film took a critical look at society, culture, and exploitation while portraying loneliness and a lack of belonging that was understated yet moving. loved the way this was formatted to look like old family films and the cinematography and acting were great too
Scorsese had a producer credit and this was a very impressive film from Alice Rohrwacher, who I wanted to check out after hearing great things about her latest film La Chimera

Week 4: Over The Rainbow
The Green Knight - 4/5
An epic with some truly incredible visual storytelling throughout. It lives up to the hype it's gotten over the years. Dev Patel shines in this role and is amongst a number of good performances. I still can't get over how beautiful this film is to just look at.
Week 5: New Ground
MoviePass, MovieCrash (directed by Muta'Ali Muhammad) - 3/5
A pretty crazy story about a game changing service. It's tragic in a sense seeing how a company founded by two black men was turned into mud by two white men who swept it out from under them. If falls into the generic 2010s business doc tropes, but it was engaging nonetheless.
I know this seems like a lazy pick and it was.
Week 5 New Ground:
Onibaba (Dir. Kaneto Shindo) 1964
I’d say this is a must watch if you’re fan of film as a medium. Apart from the great direction, great cinematography (seriously the lighting and at times stage-like character blocking is great), performances that communicate/ express a character’s internal machinations with just looks alone and an energetic score, this movie is also unexpectedly h**** as hell for 1964.
4.5/5

Week 5: Dancer In The Dark dir. Lars Von Trier (on 35mm)
f*** dude I could not sleep after watching this. such a ruthlessly brutal and unforgiving film but also some of the most beautiful musical numbers I’ve ever seen. I was welling up during “I’ve seen it all”
(I know it’s a sin that this is the only LVT I’ve seen now but I’m gonna fix that soon)
4.5/5
Decent movie, the final match kinda reminded me of Creed III bout I watched last year in its intensity and animosity btw. Loved how Zendaya was used as this inobtainable woman and she definitely spicied the rivalry between the protagonists. Shorty truly the modern day Cleopatra. Me and my friends who watched this kinda agree that we expected more, especially from Zendaya Lmaoo
Uncertain opinion on the soundtrack as well, I guess it expressed well the electricity of the sport but after a while it became redundant.
As first movie from Guadagnino I watched, they told me Call Me by yo Name is better so I'll check that one too
Catch up time!

Movie pass was so clutch you just had to be there haha . In the ktt movie pass thread we would buy standard tickets on the movie pass app and swap it for Dolby in theatre
Week 4: Over The Rainbow: Watch a film with a color in the title
Have had this sitting on my hard drive since 2020 so s/o this thread for finally making me watch it lmao
solid crime thriller. some great action scenes including multiple 20v1's lmaoo
only negative is that there were a lot of plot threads to keep up with, that by the end you barely even care for the answers the film gives you
4/5

genuinely felt so disgusted and empty when i finished watching this
will never watch again lmao

I had a thousand yard stare the whole way back from the theatre. Everyone else also looked shell shocked lol
Week 6: Back to the Drawing Board
Inside Out 2
I found Inside Out 2 to be quite a delight. It does such a great job capturing the emotions that a teenager goes through while also expanding on the creativity of the first. It’s a little bit of a rehash of the first, but with enough new elements to make it a good watch. I think the performances from the leads were great, including some great work from the new emotions such as Maya Hawke’s Anxiety and Ayo Edebiri’s Envy. Their voice performances sold the character they were playing.
The conflict in this film was unexpected to me, but when it got into it I thought “why didn’t I think this was going to be it.” It made for a nice adventure inside the mind of a teenage girl. It’s funny throughout with some of the sight gags being the best ones. I found the overall story to be pretty compelling and the Uncut Gems comparisons that some gave it are actually kind of warranted.
Visually, this is Pixar at the top of their game. It was so great seeing this stunning animation on an “IMAX” screen for the first time in quite some time (last Pixar movie I saw in theaters was Lightyear and that was like 3 weeks after release on a smaller screen). Some of the animation choices were nice to see from Pixar and this film is very beautiful to look at.
It’s not perfect. Compared to the first, I didn’t feel as emotional during this film. It’s got some moments that make me ponder, but it doesn’t get to the level of Pixar emotion that they’re known for, at least for me.
Overall I think Inside Out 2 is a worthy follow up to the first, which is a film I didn’t think could get a good sequel. I hope this film does well and makes Pixar realize that theatrical is the way to go, because seeing a Pixar film on the big screen will always feel special.
4.25/5 (rounded up to 4.5 on Letterboxd)
This ain't no disney happy ending, but if only ralph bakshi directed a fantasia film.
week 6: elemental by peter sohn
i missed this last year and just wanted to catch up on the pixar stuff tbh so this pushed me to do it. haven't seen a pixar in quite a bit so this felt nice, even though i did feel the word building and aesthetic wasn't as effortful as usual, the story was sweet and heartfelt and i enjoyed my time with it. guess i'll try to see inside out 2 in la cinema.
One of the most beautifully poignant films out there. Everyone in this sxn needs to watch it at least once in their lifetime.
Week 6: Back to the Drawing Board-
Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood
After Hit Man I decided to stick with Linklater for this week. This is more in the spirit of a Linklater movie in that it had a really loose plot. Almost felt like a documentary but I still really liked it. It was like going through a Time Machine back to a specific time and place in America with funny commentary about how people used to act
Week 5: Film from a director you've never seen a film of
Blind Beast (1969) Directed by Yasuzō Masumura
This was way more twisted than I expected it to be
Since we’re at the halfway point now we are taking a week off. Perfect time to catch up!!
