The backlash to this performance has been a bit excessive imo.

I think that people were already mad before it started because it wasn’t going to be streamed. I get that live streaming festival sets has become more common, but it still should be acceptable to not stream a set. If you want to see a performance, then go to see it live.

As for the actual performance, people wanted him to play ā€œthe hitsā€ in a traditional way (i.e. as they sound on record) or play new material. He obviously did neither, but I don’t think that he should be criticized for it. The renditions that he gave were great (his voice sounded maybe better than ever), and the remixed instrumentals kept old material fresh. The house style of some of the remixes along with the DJ set made complete sense if you have been following him for the past 4 years. Hoping for new songs or an album announcement was wishful thinking.

With all of that being said, he should not have started an hour late (which also caused the early ending), the transitions between songs should have been smoother, and he should have actually sang during Nikes/Nights. All of these things should be criticized. But the end result to me isn’t a disaster of a performance, which is how it’s being portrayed.

Stfu. They said all sets were going to be streamed for the entire time

Thankfully there were probably thousands of people recording the performance on their phones instead of watching it, so you should have no trouble finding videos :)

were litterally zero photographers present lol

yes, it's true. i lost the tweet, but the journalist from some famous outlet posted her sketchbook and said it's instead of photos, cause all photographers were banned. so there is still no official photo of coachella headliner

the funniest thing: Frank doing that s*** since 2013 Europe tour and many photos you saw on the internet during there years are rules abuse or not from official press

Are you really trying to say that videos recorded from in the crowd on phones with no sound equipment is basically the same as a live televised stream with 4K cameras and the performance completely mic’d in to the video production?

Frank worshippers been embarrassing themselves for the past 24 hours ITT.

i watched multiple people say ā€œhe brought people on stage who did nothingā€, ā€œhe didn’t sing any of the songsā€ etc

essentially lying to downplay the things he actually did right

was it a disappointment and unorganized? yes.

but he did sing beautifully, and the remixes were genuinely dope, and the kid coming on stage and dj crystal mess were special moments.

the good was undercut by the bad but i hate when they try to act like the good never happened lmao

Everyone I know that went who’s musical opinion I respect also thought it was fire but obviously the frat kids next to me who walked out after they got their picture weren’t happy that he didn’t keep it simple

Frank stans been embarrassing for a while. I mean stanning him still 7 years after blond instead of simply listening to other music is a red flag in itself. I rarely meet a Frank stan that branches out into other genres or could tolerate anything left field whatsoever

Doesn’t mean his music and his art isn’t incredible

I feel like, with no disrespect to Drake or Travis, but if you love Frank, and your second favorite or first favorite artist is one of the other two I mentioned, you probably thought the set was terrible.

If you hated Bjork's set, you probably thought this set was horrible.

The internet has changed fandom. People who would only ever like top 40 might like something pop adjacent, while not necessarily the most popular sound of the time.

The 11/12 songs he actually performed (not the lip sync performances), are some of the best performances I have ever seen live. Next to my favorite with twigs, Moses Sumney, D'Angelo, etc.
