    • his interviews with zane lowe or nardwuar are insufferable; he likes to break down the theory and intentionality behind everything from the color palettes of his outfits to modulations in the bridge of a song, guy talks like he’s delivering a thesis it’s so forced

    • he tries to control every aspect of how his albums are received, his rollouts feel like he’s begging to be considered a “visionary” with all his dumbass alter egos that end up sounding the same

    • the constant reminders that “i do it all myself”: design, production, writing, comes off like he’s preemptively defending against being undermined, even when no one’s attacking

    • he’s implied that he’s evolved past “basic” hip-hop by mocking trap beats, chains, and jordans but still borrows from the same culture when convenient (guest features with nba youngboy, rapping over dj drama)

    • called his grammy win for igor a “backhanded compliment” because it won best rap album even though he submitted it in that category.

    • he presents himself as this enigmatic, worldly tastemaker citing wes anderson, hiroshi fujiwara, and french jazz then randomly reverts to childish antics or corny punchlines, the inconsistency is more performative than authentic

    • he gets irritated when asked if he still considered himself a rapper, “i’m a composer.” such a plea for status lmaoo

i could literally go on for hours, dude is cornball personified, a cry for attention but only the kind he needs to fuel his ego.

    facts

he is not nearly as good as he thinks he is

this shouldn't bother me but the fact his early career was built on the idea of him making meme music and not taking it seriously makes this all the more annoying to me

Got 4 albums and two of them are classics, he could retire now and still be in that conversation, that's more than d'Angelo or Lauryn Hill ever released.

Frank doesn’t have an album better than the Miseducation, Voodoo or Black Messiah.

FYF was 8 (!) years ago and with that performance spawned one of my fav covers he's done ever. Played a large role in reviving Steve Monite's classic which was again covered by Theophilus London/Tame Impala

which in turn meant Tame Impala could make a track like "Is It True" (one of my ATF). Obvious inspo for Tyler's I Think too. Probs more but I'm blanking rn

Feel like this cover was the precursor to the music we heard from Frank in 2019/2020; a lot pf that could be traced back to this track. 🕺🏿🪩

Obv house music has always been big but feels like something shifted in the mainstream once it was rumored Frank was going down that route in 2019

    What could have been…

the rumors of an mpb/baile/downtempo/Bossa nova/tropical type record are extremely exciting especially if he’s really working with John Carroll Kirby
    An inspired choice
