  • Feb 19 Update

After at least 5 days on the witness stand over a two week period, Adrian Bean has been permanently excused as a witness.

Most of his testimony was regarding a September 2013 incident prosecutors alleged Young Thug was involved, however, Bean didn't provide much information it and would often say, "I don't recall" when asked about it.

  • Feb 20 Update Part 1

Detective Quinn, the cop who convinced Adrian Bean to "snitch" about Thug in a 2013 robbery, takes the stand.

About 5 minutes into Quinn's testimony, Brian Steel asks for a bench conference to ask the Judge to prevent Quinn from commenting on the veracity of witness testimony.

About 1 minute after, Quinn does exactly that - and Brian Steel asks for a mistrial.

    Motion for mistrial instantly denied.

Additionally, according to Steel, Quinn's entire testimony so far has been irrelevant and improper bolstering of his own credibility, so he has a continuing objection of it (all overruled by the Judge).

    Feb 20 Update Part 2

Detective Quinn is now talking about the day of the armed robbery incident, 9/11/2013.

He described the chaos as he responded to the scene as "the opening day at Six Flags"

The court heard the recording of Quinn interviewing a witness from Day 34 of this trial, Eduardo Flores.

On that day, Flores said that Quinn had actually recorded 2 statements from him in 2013, but Quinn deleted the first one after he decided that it was untruthful. The one the jurors listened today was the second statement.

Today devolved into chaos after the judge yelled at Steel in front of the jury and called him unprepared.

Steel will be submitting a motion to recuse Judge Glanville.

They are now talking about jail calls the state wants to play, but Steel finds objectionable. The whole reason the judge called him unprepared was because Steel wanted the judge to rule on these calls having a confrontation clause issue before being played in front of the jury. According to him, prosecution didn't make it clear they were gonna play these specific calls until today, among thousands of calls.

yea possibly. This trial is moving very slowly.

The state has 737 witnesses total. We haven't even reached the 50 mark yet.

The only way for this to go faster is for the state to limit the amount of witnesses they call.

Also the judge needs to limit the amount of days off.

Today was a half day. No court tomorrow. Friday is another half day.

    March 25 Update Part 1

The state got 10 year old statements into evidence last second that Steel unsuccessfully tried to get suppressed. Detective Quinn back on the stand.

Quinn met Thug at Lenox Mall shortly after the 2013 incident and told Thug that Adrian Bean "snitched on him" and put him in the armed robbery car.

Thug said he wasn't involved at all and was otherwise silent. Additionally, he later saw Thug and DK hanging out at the mall.

The state didn't give Steel these statements until December 2023. They say that's when they got them. The judge admitted them as long as the State lays proper foundation.

Steel was able to question Quinn about these statement's outside the presence of the jury to clarify 2 points

    • Quinn never made any notes or otherwise memorialized these interactions with Thug

    • The situation was not "custodial" aka Thug was not detained or anything

  • Mar 30

    March 25 Update Part 2

Quinn says the reason Thug was never arrested for this incident is he doesn’t arrest people only based off one witness’ testimony. Bean was the only piece of evidence putting Thug at the scene.

The gun that Bean said was Thugs gun was unable to be confirmed to have Thugs DNA.

Quinn says when he saw Thug himself, he “denied any involvement but was very respectful.” and told him that Bean put his name in this incident and that he’d never arrest him off “one joker saying your name” but he’ll be back if he gets any other evidence.

Quinn also claims that Thug introduced him to his sister, Dolly, and he got her number because they were looking to hire security.

    March 25 Update Part 3

    --Cross examination starts--

First up is attorney Max Schardt who is pressing Quinn about “destroying evidence”

In a recorded interview with Flores, there are references to a “first statement”. There is no trace of this first statement. Flores claimed on the stand that the detective deleted it.

Quinn said he does not know who took or may have destroyed this first statement. “It’s in the ether”

Second was attorney Matthews (lawyer for Quay) who asks questions about why it’s so important to have corroborating evidence and not rely on 1 witnesses testimony only. He also pressed on the destroying evidence point.

    Steel is third up.

Immediately, Quinn contradicts Ms. Loves original contention that Bean never went to the hospital and says Bean goes directly from the car crash scene to Grady.

He says doesn’t know who questioned Bean first or where it happened.

Additionally, he confirms detectives who questioned DK and Big Fred also did not record those interviews.

    March 28 Update Part 1

Today's first witness REFUSED to appear and dodged the subpoena, so she was arrested and was FORCED to take the stand today.

(Detective Quinn couldn't make it this day, so the state is putting up other witnesses in the meantime.)

Ms. Love says the witness told her she was contemplating ending her own life. When asked why, she said "because y'all (the state) are doing this".

Ms. Love says she left after that, but when they called her to come testify, she said "she was in the hospital". But apparently, the state had "eyes on her home" and "her car did not leave the driveway" so they got an arrest warrant.

    This sounds scary
Like the witness are being threatened with something horrible if they testify

  • Mar 30

    March 28 Update Part 2

Bruce Harvey makes sure it is absolutely clear that the defense knew NONE of any of what Ms. Love said until she just said it right now.

He says arresting a witness and her instable mental state is all BRADY MATERIAL and the defense was entitled to know all of this beforehand.

He objects the witness testifies until they can deal with the new information accordingly. He also wants to make clear that the state is causing the delay today by hiding this information until now.

Sounds like the judge disagrees and allowed her to testify anyway.

However, Steel brings up a separate objection - he provides caselaw stating that if this witness completely "shuts down" and refuses to answer anything (like, actual silence, not "i dont recall"), the state may not ask leading questions or introduce any of her statements as they will be considered hearsay.

Ms. Love asks the judge to ask Steel if he has any information (from past interviews during his preparation) that leads him to believe this witness will be completely silent. Steel says he is not obligated to answer in front of the state, but would happily answer privately with the judge.

Then Steel asks for a bathroom break.

Here's some context to who this witness is

    Her name is Ms Bennett.

In 2013, Ms. A. Bennett told the police that she got robbed by Thug, DK, and someone she thinks was Thug's brother at her apartment. she did not call the police at that time.

Some time later that night at like 3 AM, she hears shots outside her apartment, calls the police to report the shots, and tells them about the robbery.

When police tried to follow up on this, they were not able to get a hold of her, so the investigation was dropped.

The statements still exist though, and they want to use this witness to get those statements in.

She obviously doesn't want to testify, but she's the only way to get them in.

    March 28 Update Part 3

The judge's ruling is that the defense will have 30 minutes to talk to this witness (who is literally in handcuffs rn) before he will have her take the stand.

The state somehow still objects to even that, but it was overruled.

Ms. Bennett takes the stand, in handcuffs. Cameras aren't allowed to show her face.

After Ms. Love brings up the witnesses mother, the witness is brought to tears.

Witness: "I already told Ms. Love about my mother, that was a tragic situation"

Ms. Love: "I'm sorry about that Ms. Bennet"

Witness: "You don't gotta apologize Ms. Love, I know you did it on purpose"

I think her and her family is being treated by gangs and their life is on the line if she gives up info on Thug.

Why else would she consider suicide instead of taking the stand?

    Poor lady

  • Mar 30

    March 28 Update Part 4

Ms. Love is asking the witness about Thug's relationship with the father of her kids, Ola Playa, in 2013.

She also just straight up asked "Are you afraid of Jeffery Williams?".

The witness answered "No" but Thug's lawyers objected to the question and asked for a bench conference.

  • Mar 30

    March 28 Update Part 5

They are going over Ms. Bennett's apparent 2013 statement to police about Thug and DK robbing her at her apartment, pointing a gun at her, stealing jeweler and her gun, and shooting a gun into her wall.

She repeatedly denies ever saying any of this.

The witness argues with Ms. Love about the premises of her questions. For example:

"Did you tell the police that Thug & DK later called you and apologized for doing what they did?"

"You said they took my phone how would they call me?"

"You ever have more than one phone?"
    "No"

    March 28 Update Part 6

    That's it for the state.

Keith Adams goes up for cross examination.

He starts by asking about the circumstances of her arrest for failure to appear / dodging the subpoena.

In a quick intermission outside the presence of the jury, Judge Glanville talks to the witness and says he doesn't want her to remain in jail, but she will need to come back tomorrow.

He said if she agrees to stay in a hotel under state supervision, but come back tomorrow, he'll sign an order to release her. She agrees.

    Ms. Bennett is excused.

Now it's time for today's (March 29) update.

    Trial today was very interesting.
