I’ve been a fan of the OG show since I was a kid and own all the seasons on DVD. I was not excited about this reboot at all when I first heard but after seeing it, I’m kind of f***ing with it

It’s surprisingly well done but there are flaws

I feel like the show should be funnier. It’s well-acted, well-written, the drama is compelling and there are a few moments of small humor but I haven’t busted out laughing once while watching it. The show seems to lack the ability to make fun of itself like the original often did. I get it’s a drama and everything but even some of the best dramas like “The Sopranos” had scenes where I laughed my ass off

But what I love about this show though is how it takes really minor things from the OG version and milks them for maximum drama. You can tell the writers were real Fresh Prince fans

Will’s friend Ice Tray who was only a one episode character in the OG is incorporated into a bigger role here, which I love. Lisa, Fred Wilkes and Judge Carl Robertson are also in this b**** all reinvented. I wonder if we’ll get to see Will’s other aunts or Hilary’s guy Trevor in this later on as well

I was reluctant on this new Will at first because how the f*** can you replace Will Smith?

But this new dude Jabari Banks is actually really good.He steps into the shoes of Will Smith pretty well but still does his own thing with the role to the point where it doesn’t feel like you’re watching a knockoff. It’s pretty solid

My favorite of the new characters though is the 3rd Aunt Viv. She has the exact same energy as the original. She even kind of sounds like her. I can’t imagine anyone but James Avery in the role of Uncle Phil so this new one was really weird to watch but he’s growing on me

I also really like this new Jazz. He’s a lot deeper but his friendship with Will was instantly believable and I’m hoping they do a lot more with him in the future. Hopefully he gets to bag Hilary in this version too

Speaking of which, this new Hilary gives me mixed emotions. I like Coco Jones in the role but she feels more like a modernized version of Ashley than Hilary to me, from her woke influencer persona to her taking the place of being Will’s favorite cousin. Coco Jones is not only fine as f*** but also really charming in her portrayal and I’m glad they are giving the character more layers this time around but I do miss the ditzier aspects of the character that I think could have allowed for a breath of fresh air at some moments in this more dramatic story.

Also - why is New Ashley being given the short end of the stick?

The little girl playing her is good and has the same vibe that little Tatyana Ali had in the first seasons of the original but they have no idea what to do with her. She only has a few lines and she wasn’t even in episode 3 at all. It’s kind of disappointing since Ashley was established as being Will’s favorite cousin from the very beginning of the OG show but here he never even talks to her. It’s an odd direction to take.

Geoffrey is nothing like the original. Bro feels more like a security guard than a butler but I fw it. Lol it feels like he’s 2 seconds away from beating Will’s ass in most of their scenes together. If the d*** dealer who’s after Will ever manages to find his way to their mansion, Geoffrey will definitely be the one to f*** him up

But the worst thing about this reboot is Carlton hands down

OG Carlton was an annoying snobby a****** at times as well but the humorous tone of the show and Alfonso Ribeiro’s charming performance always allowed us to laugh at it. Due to the serious tone of Bel-Air however, New Carlton’s behavior comes off 10 times worse than he ever did in the OG. He’s not even a funny a******, nah just a straight up a****** that I want to punch in the face every time he’s onscreen. He has no redeeming qualities this far but I assume they will humanize him more as the season goes on. It’s just crazy seeing my favorite character be my most hated here

All in all, the show is good though and it doesn’t feel corny or cheap. It just takes a while to adjust to if you’re a longtime Fresh Prince fan

I miss goofy Carlton, I miss birdbrain Hilary, I miss s*** talking Geoffrey, Will making goofy faces and winking at the camera. But I can’t tell if these are valid criticisms or just me not adjusting well to the fact that it’s a completely different version of what I grew up with. It’s probably the latter and I expect I’ll get used to it as the season goes on

But like I said before, I am really enjoying this show despite my criticisms. I wish they would have put the whole season out at once instead of making us wait each week but I guess that’s how the streaming models are keeping customers nowadays

I’m def watching episode 4 as soon as it drops

This is nowhere near as bad as I expected it to be. I wouldn't say it is bad, but it's nothing special either. That Aunt Viv and Hilary storyline is f***ing terrible

In episode 1 when Phil is talking to Vivian about how Wills dad is gone, he doesn't say his dad left. I think Phil got his dad locked up or something

Logged onto Facebook and it looks like the FB crowd f***ing with this. Wouldn't be surprised if it gets renewed for a season 2 if the quality stays at least the same.

They should’ve made new Carlton straight up effeminate instead of an a******

Idk if that’s necessary but he already does give off an effeminate vibe in some of his deliveries
