Ion like how they’re making Carlton be so “uncultured” for lack of a better word. One of Carlton’s greatest scenes was in season 4 iirc, when they were in college, and they were at the black fraternity party. Buddy called Carlton a sellout.

that was after character development bro. Of course 4 seasons into the show, Carlton displayed a lot more awareness. But in the beginning, he was very Uncle Tom-ish

He avidly supported Reagan, jumped for joy when Trump pulled up at the mansion. Remember that season 1 episode where those racist cops pulled over him and Will then sent them to jail yet Carlton was still making excuses for them? On some “they were just doing their jobs” type beat

This 2022 version dancing with his friends rapping the N word isn’t at all far fetched. It’s on brand for the character and the s*** happens in real-life

Yes it is. First off nobody knew how racist trump was back in the 90's. Why you think all them rappers were taking photos with him? Also not being exposed to racism or being a republican at that time especially does not mean you were an uncle tom or even close to letting the N-word be dropped in your presence like that.

they cast a beautiful girl man, yeah after nia long the standard was gonna be high but i know a lot of girls that looks just like that who never get the chance to be seen as an object of affection in film & tv.

agreed man. this new Lisa is beautiful, she looks like so many fine ass black girls I grew up and went to school with. She’s hella down to earth and chill in her personality as well so it makes sense that Will would gravitate towards her instead of the bougie broads at that school

this is something I’ve always thought about but this show is really putting it into perspective for me on how deprived we have been of dark skinned black women on tv. these women are so beautiful

I love my Zendayas and Zoe Kravitzs but it’s a shame that it’s mainly light skins holding it down for black women in film and television. I need more melanin on my screen

Back to Lisa though, admittedly I’m having a hard time understanding how she and Carlton were in a relationship. Carlton is such a coon that I feel like he’d go for a white girl instead and Lisa is so chill that I can’t imagine her entertaining his preppy bullshit. hopefully we’ll get more backstory

again - see the season 1 episode where he and Will were clearly subjects of racial profiling and Carlton spent the whole episode defending the police

Carlton def had coon tendencies in the OG show. He grew over time but he still regularly flaunted his wealth and privilege to Will, another black man, just like he does on here. the arguments he makes to defend his friends using the N-word by blaming it on rappers is very similar to the arguments I hear from real-life, Black republican types. It’s realistic, y’all just don’t like it

It’s another reason why I think the frat leader in that clip y’all brought up had a slight point and Will came off as a hypocrite in that episode. Will and the show spent years making fun of Carlton’s tone-deafness when it came to the black experience but suddenly it was an issue when someone else pointed it out

BECAUSE HE WASN'T EXPOSED TO RACISM!!! He was sheltered his whole life from that not being in the streets. Why you think Will bet him to spend a weekend in Compton and was surprised when he fit in? Coon tendencies? The frat leader had a point? Oh you one of them? Good day sir

Lol you’re being mad sensitive over this discussion about fictional characters. I love the show too but calm down I’m just tryna have a nuanced discussion with y’all

The frat leader was an a****** but yeah he was basically making the same point about Carlton that Will had spent years making beforehand. So for the show to just treat him like a one-dimensional villain instead of someone like Will with real reasons for feeling the way he did was weird to me. But it was a 90’s sitcom so I don’t hold it against them too much, it’s amazing the episode was even made at all

And I disagree that Carlton wasn’t exposed to racism. He was just oblivious to it, like we saw in that police episode I keep bringing up. He spent a hell of a lot of time in predominantly white environments. Carlton is my fav character along with Uncle Phil but he definitely had some coon tendencies. The whole Banks family did and the show regularly pointed this out. There was a flashback episode with Carlton as a kid and he didn’t even know he was black lmaoo

I’m not pulling this s*** out of nowhere

Over time, Carlton and everyone else became more down to earth. Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv became reminded of their roots particularly due to Will’s influence. One of the main things I love about the Will/Carlton dynamic is how it shows that black people aren’t a monolith and there is more than one way to be a respectable Black male character but those coon aspects of the character were always there. He was snobby, elitist, and looked down on those of a lesser tax bracket. The show regularly called him out on this as well. Same thing with OG Hilary having WHITE women on her talk show modeling African clothing to try and appeal to her Black audience

The Banks family was out of touch as f***. Even the more down to earth ones like Aunt Viv and Ashley had their moments. This new show is just taking those pre-established aspects of the characters (especially Carlton’s) to another level like they are doing with everything else, such as Will’s backstory.

I think the main difference is OG Carlton’s behavior came from a place of naïveté due to being sheltered like you mentioned whereas this New Carlton is much more malicious

Tbh the main thing about this New Carlton that took me by surprise is how he willingly lets his friend plant d**** on Will. OG Carlton would have NEVER tolerated that kind of s*** even on his worst day

he was never an uncle tom.

    1. black people loved trump in the 90s. you’re showing your age.

    2. he was republican but the whole family was republican.

    3. in the police episode it his genuine naiveness and ignorance that made him believe it was all a mistake. his monologue in the last seconds proved it. his naiveness was not malicious.

black is biology not an ideology. he was not a “sellout” for never experiencing the hood. the blacks where he’s from simply live a different life blacks are not a monolith.

you’ll never see this in a black show ever again because it blurs the lines of whats “black”. with thinking like this people like joe biden can’t get away with saying s*** like “if you don’t vote for me, you ain’t black”. they want blackness to be an ideology. an ideology they control.

a lot of what you said I just addressed in my last post. we don’t entirely disagree

admittedly I may be showing my age in the Trump s***. I wasn’t alive in the 90s but Trump was wild even back then. He talked mad s*** about the Central Park Five. What Black people loved him back then? Jay and Pac? Black celebrities don’t represent all Black people. Like you said, we’re not a monolith. I remember having a similar convo with an old boss who loved Trump and refused to admit he was racist

That's what I'm saying. Carlton was a preppy cornball that wasn't exposed to racism like that, but he wouldn't be the only black dude on the team singing Hot Ni**a letting white dudes drop the N-word like nothing. I get it's a dramatic take, but that's just some unforgivable stuff

No one's salty bro. You just don't know what you talking about. You called someone an uncle tom because they were republican in the 90's and didn't do stereotypical "black" stuff.

Then typed all that up and said nothing. Miss me with that hotep ish lol

Lol not only are you salty but you lack comprehension skills apparently

I never said Carlton was an Uncle Tom. I said he had those characteristics, there’s a difference. and I backed up all my opinions with examples from the actual show

meanwhile you’re making statements about me as a person just because you disagree w me about a fictional character instead of backing that s*** up like someone who knows what he’s talking about. but whatever man, I’ll let you have this one seeing as you clearly can’t handle someone challenging your views
