Maybe theres another word for it, but I think gatekeeping is unfairly demonized both online and in person.

Im not talking about annoying people who criticize others for not being a TRUE member, although that is gatekeeping i admit. Still, sometimes its best that the genera public doesn’t know about a niche subject.

In my experiences almost every niche group gets turned inside out when it gets a large following, and it ruins the personality. Am i being too short sighted?

Do you think s*** gets played out when it gets to the mainstream or is it just the way things go

I get where you’re coming from and you have a valid point to a degree. But usually people gatekeep s*** specifically to be toxic. Does more harm than good in most cases. The large influx of people who jump into something randomly especially a piece of media are the reason said media can contribute, have sequels, thrive

Demonizing casual fans of anything is corny and shows the person doing is an uninteresting bozo with no identity probably outside of one thing

Gaining a large following is more beneficial in the long run than maintaining the integrity of a niche group

Can you explain wym by being turned inside out? From what I’ve seen when it comes to gatekeeping it’s usually just lame people with superiority complexes. Being hip to something before most is generally meaningless.

P*** is for the masses and used to control you. I don’t partake in that prostration.

I hear you. I supposed what i mean is i feel that a majority of the time, you get to see something you felt strongly about get… warped? Its a bit of a selfish mindset now that i type it, but it doesnt feel like youre a part of it anymore.

Integrity becomes less and less of a relevant priority and people start focusing on longevity, how far out can we push it, and when its run its course it gets deserted.

When it comes to being short sighted, iirc didn't you want to get rid of everyone under 5'10? Why would you be heightkeeping is you're short sighted

If you feel something gets ruined because more people know about then you should question why you liked that thing in the first place. Did you actually like that thing because it was unique and it meant something to you? Or did you like it because you felt special knowing about something that others didn't?

Gatekeeping keeps the casuals at attention.
It's when gatekeeping becomes political is when there's a problem

I spoke a bit about it in response to nujA, but just that theres a shift from i guess passionate enthusiasts who want to see something come alive, versus indifferent spectators and trend jockeys who just hop on cuz why not.

It does attract more faithful fans tho, but to me it just spells the beginning of the end

Thats a good question to ask yourself, i agree. I guess I speak for the people who ask the first question, but truth be told id say a lot of them share in the same question.

This is how I feel about a few series I’m into so that’s why I get it.

Berserk for example. I wanted to get the infamous brand tattoo as a representation of all the struggle I’m going through and the fact I’m still here pushing through hell and defying my fate. It’s my favorite series and the main character means a lot to me. Now since the author died every mf on the internet is getting it and it’s become a meme at this point seeing people get brand tattoos and buying up all the books and now genuine fans who have been around for years can’t find them.

Gate keeping is essential tbh. Look at black culture and how we let mfs in and now people think they get to dictate our culture or what’s in and out. F*** that.
