We even got outsiders trying to speak like us when 10 years ago cacs were mocking the way we speak and now they’re trying their hardest to imitate what they see and hear. S*** crazy out here.

    Gatekeeping is necessary at times

This is how I feel about a few series I’m into so that’s why I get it.

Berserk for example. I wanted to get the infamous brand tattoo as a representation of all the struggle I’m going through and the fact I’m still here pushing through hell and defying my fate. It’s my favorite series and the main character means a lot to me. Now since the author died every mf on the internet is getting it and it’s become a meme at this point seeing people get brand tattoos and buying up all the books and now genuine fans who have been around for years can’t find them.

    New chapter soon chief

I feel that 100%. I been meaning to buy a collectors edition cuz i love that series too!

Its a fine line between preserving the integrity of whatever’s being gatekept, and not being a c*** about it

This is a good example at a macro level

Youll have some people saying diversifiying the culture is good, which i can agree with partially. But then id also agree with you that sometimes its not fair, or detrimental to the culture. Fine line to tread

Gatekeeping is really just an attempt at trying to maintain a sense of personal ownership over a thing which I get, but usually doing so isn't really conducive to the growth and prosperity of that thing.

Gatekeeping is needed, it's sort of like that "participation trophy" bullshit we got growing up. NOT everyone is qualified/allowed to have a say in things.

This. When it comes to gatekeeping things like music and anime and things like that I can agree it get petty. But when it comes to cultural s***, folks got the right to protect what’s theirs. If we don’t gatekeep culture that’s when things will get weird and disconnect will start happening.

  • Like supreme when Odd Future made them even popular?

  • Aug 14, 2021

    I think I agree

I feel like cultural appropriation can kinda extend beyond ethnic cultures but we forget about that and call it gatekeeping when you just don't want to let dumbasses co-opt a culture you identify with

Maybe theres another word for it, but I think gatekeeping is unfairly demonized both online and in person.

Im not talking about annoying people who criticize others for not being a TRUE member, although that is gatekeeping i admit. Still, sometimes its best that the genera public doesn’t know about a niche subject.

In my experiences almost every niche group gets turned inside out when it gets a large following, and it ruins the personality. Am i being too short sighted?

Do you think s*** gets played out when it gets to the mainstream or is it just the way things go

I 1000 percent agree with you op

The genral public usually never takes the time to actually learn about things

And then the artist or whatever attempts to satisfy people that don’t truly enjoy or understand them

Demonizing casual fans of anything is corny and shows the person doing is an uninteresting bozo with no identity probably outside of one thing

    Completely disagree bud

Casuals are usually the uninteresting ones

Depending on what it is it’s okay to not want your favorite thing to be ruined

I spoke a bit about it in response to nujA, but just that theres a shift from i guess passionate enthusiasts who want to see something come alive, versus indifferent spectators and trend jockeys who just hop on cuz why not.

It does attract more faithful fans tho, but to me it just spells the beginning of the end

Gate keeping is essential tbh. Look at black culture and how we let mfs in and now people think they get to dictate our culture or what’s in and out. F*** that.

We really have to do way better

Idk how but we do 😔

A lot of people wanted the deluxe books but held out for Amazon sales. I was fortunate enough to get mine super early on. But volume 1-3 seem to be impossible for most people to get now

Yea you can’t gatekeep something that’s like already huge and the genral public already has access to it

But the kids on NBA Twitter are def annoying as f*** spamming the same s***

    Not necessarily

    I’ve been a “sneakerhead” since i was 11

    I didn’t start having money until 2019

Prices of some of my favorite shoes are just to expensive because all the new people coming in tryna be cool and trendy
