Not even on some mean s*** I come across that way sometimes. I just really hate when people I don’t know call me bro

Math, reading, and writing should definitely be tested, but a good majority of what’s taught can be debated imo

  • Orpheus

also, w/o grades, how would one entice a student to still work hard in classes they dislike? how would one entice a student at all? at least w/ GPAs most students feel the need to at least try. a better dream would be just generally improving the quality of education, removing the advantages those of higher economic class have (ACT tutors, connections, etc), and making sure no student is left behind

I would give you a bite on your bum

    these reactions wtf

A lot of the people on here can’t think when it comes to imagining something better for society

  • Dec 7, 2020

don't necessarily disagree, but the problem is how do we measure people collectively for their work? I'm all for tailored education, but it's hard to create such a platform to assess the general public.

If you want to return to the wild you are free to do so

No you're not lol. Due to our collective effect we've made life a LOT less feasible for those "wild" cultures

In Ops alternate universe, this nigga would pass medical school

  • Dec 7, 2020

Make education free first before you even get in to that

  • Dec 7, 2020

In Ops universe,a 1st grader could basically take the same curriculum as a 12 grader cause none of the work they do would matter cause it’s not tested. Education would just be one big experiment with teachers giving advice.

People are unequal in many categories though

  • People aren’t equal and can be objectively ranked in many aspects

  • disagree

getting good grades isn't rocket science and it doesn't take a whole lot of smarts. if you're responsible and you do the work then your grades will be good. that's fair enough to me.

  • Dec 7, 2020

Op kinda right tho. Theres a ted talk about how school teaches kids to stop being creativd because it punishes u for being "wrong" and to be creative u have to risk being wrong. Over and over again. So it makes us not want to experiment and take risks.

Id be down with changing western education and reforming grading

  • Dec 7, 2020

Standardized testing and the current school structure (in the US) are the issue. Grading is generally objectively based on knowledge of the subject and is necessary

  • sounds like OP didn't get good grades

  • Dec 7, 2020

I think there are a lot of students and even professors/administrators that prioritize grades over learning, and that's the only time it's a problem.

I know a lot of kids who stay up really late studying and it's affected their mental health bad before. Also know a lot of kids who have taken adderall to finish a project on time or study right before an exam. Obviously both behaviors are bad and put you in a mental state when you can't really commit stuff to memory. A lot of kids dont do well on their finals because they only learned enough to pass the exams during the semester and don't really remember it by the end.

Also seen professors and high school teachers in absurdly difficult classes that will pass everyone or give everyone an A/B because they want their class to look fair. Or they want their students to get into better colleges. I don't think we need to "abolish grading" but i think culturally we put too much importance on it for sure and that's gotta change

  • Dec 7, 2020

    regular grading is okay
grading on a curve on the other hand is a f***ing nightmare
