I dont really get the whole budget critique. instead of stretching the budget to have constructs everywhere resulting in cheap sfx, they use it tastefully and in ways that makes sense for the story they're telling. (e.g. Hal keeping his ring low on charge because he doesn't want to recite the oath. Which lines up with a character that's overly jaded)
I get its a GL show but its clearly a more character driven and grounded take
I didn’t have an issue with it till this episode. If there was any episode that the budget should’ve been allocated to, it was this one. There was barely any constructs used before the ring was depleted and none of the aliens ever show their true forms including the manhunter which is lame. I think the budget is an issue but it’s also clear the creator of this show doesn’t respect the comic books which makes it a weird fit in the larger DCU which had a very comic booky start with Superman

I feel like criticizing the budget only makes sense when the sfx in the show looks bad not for what you didn't get in it. Even then in this episode, they did a pretty good job with showing constructs even though most were defensive
We dont know if the finale requires even more of the budget than this episode
How is it a weird fit lol
this is my problem: we don’t know enough about hal to even have a handle on what he’s betraying?
this is fundamentally why i think having an older hal is so stupid. there’s not enough time to understand his character, and what? he’s reduced to an aging has been with racist undertones.
then why was he someone to admire in the first place ? are we going to learn about that in the last 3 episodes? it’s just the stupidest narrative hole, and it’s all fueled by the most hit/miss comics writer in recent memory
”As you can imagine mama, I’m mad as all hell and I plan on doing something about it. But first I’m going to take that ring clean off that motherfuckers finger.”
Bro was in flow state

I’ve noticed a lot of comic book nerds first major gripe with anything has to do with this too

Caught this one in realtime
Happened twice in the same scene lol, they're not classically trained for profanity
Those f***in aliens kept acting like blowing themselves up would leave the whole city as good as nuked, but their explosions were kinda lame
A line in the show that had me kinda
was the Guardian saying Lanterns aren’t allowed to intervene in Earth’s conflicts. That’s f***in stupid. We’re supposed to believe a Lantern shouldnt stop a large-scale genocide (ahem) but it’s totally fine for them to stop a war on some distant ass planet?

I feel like we have inklings of it already but episode 7 is said to be Hal's backstory .
He said this in the 86 flashback
Though you can't see my face, know that my commitment to fighting evil will never waver. The night I received this ring, I was asked only one question, if I was afraid. I remain as steadfast now as I was then. I am fearless.'
Hal's was already a beloved hero for 30 years prior to 2016 and someone to admire and respect as earth's protector. But 2016 hal let himself get manipulated by Sinestro to devise a plan that gets him back in good grace with the guardians that pretty much got a lot of innocent people killed. And he did this because of his ego and fear of being replaced, which is a betrayal to the commitment he made as a hero. In this episode you can see him reconcile with this between saving people or going off to capture Zoe. Saving John or keeping the ring.

i think that's a cogent take, but I can't help but feel the missed opportunity here

Fair. I kinda do want hal to last past this season

honestly, i'm just a hal jordan/kyle rayner era fan. I want to see them hangout
I’m really confused on why John shed a tear for Hal in the future when seeing his body. They never developed a real friendship lol
you don't have to have a friendship to cry over somebody
and it's clear they both have a level of respect for each other that is rare. there's also a lot of emotional baggage for John when it comes to Hal, whether it be his traumatizing childhood, or even the entire 2016 time period they shared together. they've been through a lot lol. it tracks

idk why you gotta explain this
