Hey everyone, here's a summary of the latest Murakami book discussions!
A lot of people have been talking about their experiences with different Murakami novels, sharing which ones they've read and their thoughts on them.
There's some excitement about the new Murakami novel, "The City and Its Uncertain Walls," which was released recently.
That's it for now! Enjoy your Murakami reads and keep the discussions going.
alright, 300 pages into Killing Commendatore and I’ve found it very fun and compelling so far. it’s still fairly slow, but i enjoy novels that wander at their own pace, as long as there’s some interesting events along the way.
the way Murakami is telling/has structured the story reminds me a lot of Colorless Tsukuru, with the back and forth between the present and a number of moments from the distant (and not so distant) past, but that might just be his style lol that’s just the only reference point i have.
i like how some of the magical elements are even more blatant than they were in Colorless Tsukuru, though.

yoooo Killing Commendatore goes straight off the rails at the end loving it. got 100 more pages, then it’s time for this Kafka On the Shore
"An English translation of Mr Murakami's newest title will be made available later this year." 👀

damn, Kafka on the Shore’s first 100 pages are way more enticing than those of the other two Murakami novels i’ve read mfs getting mass hypnotized and talking to cats, but it’s all set in the real world lmao
this is my kind of s*** right here

can’t put this one down, already halfway through. loving the alternating POVs with one magical plot and one that’s more grounded (so far). Oshima and Hoshino are such great side characters. this novel doesn’t give me the same bleak, isolated feelings as Colorless Tsukuru and Commendatore did fairly often.
gunna finish it up in the next couple days, then start 1Q84
has anyone read hard boiled wonderland? im confused because at the beginning of the book the main character says calcutecs work until they die, but later he explains his plans for retirement. am i misunderstanding something?

facts
coming up on the last 100 pages rn, this thing is feeling GOAT level
i’ve got Wind Up Bird & After Dark coming in (copped both for like $20 total, love shopping used). so after Kafka it’s 1Q84, then After Dark, then Wind Up.
very exciting, finding an author i enjoy enough to binge like this.

I was too shook by Kafka to read another Murakami, might do wind up bird
just finished Kafka and WOW. what a masterful ending from the dude who’s known for abrupt, unsatisfying finales.
this novel was amazing, and the epitome of every description I’ve ever heard of Murakami and his works. he crossed boundaries here, but none of it was bothersome or in bad taste.
there’s so much i could say, but the way in which he’s able to weave such a complete and satisfying narrative out of such a unique structure, with the alternating POVs, tenses, and degrees of fantasy from chapter to chapter is so impressive.
onto 1Q84
