alright, 300 pages into Killing Commendatore and I’ve found it very fun and compelling so far. it’s still fairly slow, but i enjoy novels that wander at their own pace, as long as there’s some interesting events along the way.

the way Murakami is telling/has structured the story reminds me a lot of Colorless Tsukuru, with the back and forth between the present and a number of moments from the distant (and not so distant) past, but that might just be his style lol that’s just the only reference point i have.

i like how some of the magical elements are even more blatant than they were in Colorless Tsukuru, though.

can’t put this one down, already halfway through. loving the alternating POVs with one magical plot and one that’s more grounded (so far). Oshima and Hoshino are such great side characters. this novel doesn’t give me the same bleak, isolated feelings as Colorless Tsukuru and Commendatore did fairly often.

gunna finish it up in the next couple days, then start 1Q84

i’ve got Wind Up Bird & After Dark coming in (copped both for like $20 total, love shopping used). so after Kafka it’s 1Q84, then After Dark, then Wind Up.

very exciting, finding an author i enjoy enough to binge like this.

just finished Kafka and WOW. what a masterful ending from the dude who’s known for abrupt, unsatisfying finales.

this novel was amazing, and the epitome of every description I’ve ever heard of Murakami and his works. he crossed boundaries here, but none of it was bothersome or in bad taste.

there’s so much i could say, but the way in which he’s able to weave such a complete and satisfying narrative out of such a unique structure, with the alternating POVs, tenses, and degrees of fantasy from chapter to chapter is so impressive.

    onto 1Q84
