With the pool friend, i met him when he was bartending and we played each other in chess. We became friends like half a year later through both of us trying to f*** the owner.

He liked to play while drunk, and honestly he liked to win and clown people. Since we quit hanging out at the bar, he stopped playing consistently, while I didn’t, so i started beating him consistently. Atp he’s stopped and got super into pool.

The smash friend had moved to a uni a few hours away, and got depressed. He got into smash because he’s really smart and felt pressured to do well in chess, smash requires a different skillset and his pride isn’t on the line in the same way. Towards the end, when we played, the games would take forever because he spent a super long time planning out each move, to the point I’d moved instantly because i could predict his response. It was probably 6-4, 7-3 territory in terms of record.

With most of male friends, we have shared interests, and when I hang out with them, we usually spend our time on a shared activity. I got into chess a few years ago, and when I hang out with my male friends, we often talk and play some games. If it’s in the evening, we’ll grab some beers out of the fridge.

This year, 2 of my closest friends got into new hobbies: one got really into playing some old Smash Bros game and the other pool.

Obv I end up playing those with them, and I suck at both. To the point i could easily get 10-0’d in either one. I respect the time they’ve put in, but I have 0 interest in improving. Ive gotten a lot better at both out of respect for them, but I’m not going to spend my own time getting better at them.

They’ve both lost interest in chess (somewhat coincidentally i got a lot better and was winning more) and I feel like it shifted our friendship dynamics
