Really good numbers for Durk and shows ‘some’ potential marketplace value for trenches rap. No big single in rotation, no lil baby or drake feature, etc
I do wonder though, where’s the ceiling here for trenches rap as rap continues to trend towards its biggest stars being opp and trenches based
In the early 10’s, rap created mega superstars in part because the rappers were really good, but had images and pop appeal records that were really easy to push and digest. That is not the case for smurk, baby, YB, etc
Gunna has album of the year right now
Say it again for the niggas in the front and back
GUNNA WUNNA
I remember him in the og Donda sales thread saying he was gonna do like 120k
Kanye still up there w the top niggas in the game even though his first album came out 18 years ago. That’s gotta hurt if you’re a hater of his lol
Kanye has def entered that category of OG who defies all sales and relevance odds in reference to typical hip hop time scales, and even after being beyond his peak the descent is a slow and stable one. I’ll put Jay and Dr. Dre in that category as well, think I’ll put Wayne in there too given that he still sells great and no one would be surprised if he put out a hit tomorrow. Think I’ll already put Drake, Cole, and Kendrick there despite it not even being clear if they’ve peaked or not.
Interesting that Kanye, Dr. Dre, and Jay Z have all transcended from recording and tourist artist into proper influential businessmen and still make music people find exciting. Can’t really say the same for other moguls like Birdman, Diddy, and Master P.
I fully expect Drake to enter that kinda mogul sphere once it’s evident he’s maximized significant gains in his music, though it’s not clear when that point will be.

There’s no ceiling. The real will always win.

“Real” is subjective
Durk’s version of “real” is not MORE real than Drake’s just because he’s “from the trenches”
There’s a very hard ceiling I think, on rappers who can’t crossover. You can be a rap and culture superstar, but it’s hard to be a megastar when you dont / can’t crossover

Durk is the ceiling for that type of rap and he’s setting it.
YB can’t be compared he has a cult fanbase so his standards can’t be followed.
Lil Baby isn’t in this convo tho. He’s a real superstar has commercial brand deals and his lyrics aren’t violent like theirs.

I agree about Lil Baby. He’s already a megastar. His arena tour that he headlined is underrated
And I agree that durk is setting the ceiling, I’m just interested in what that ceiling will be or is.

Interesting thought- I’m torn on whether or not Durk would need to modify his conduct to become truly mega level appeal or if the palates of mainstream listeners will become more palatable to his lyrical content like they did for Wayne and 50.
