ur prob gnna be fine. keep in mind NYC is an absolutely massive city and for every s***ty subway ride there's like 500 normal ones. S*** can get shady, and s*** has happened yea, but u gotta remember thats like a .02% chance, 99% of the time its safe.
I’ve never once felt unsafe in nyc and the first time I went I was staying in bed stuy, so either gentrification going dumb stupid or you really Just mind your business as much as possible or nyc crime way overblown or a combo of all 3
