Nobody is thinking of Yeat etc when u say 2015. We know who the artist that made up the 2015 era. And one of Future Travis Kendrick Cole Thug Drake Tyler Carti Uzi may have put out some of your favorite music ever in this era.

If someone thinks of famous Dex first when they hear 2015 that’s on them

Outside of Kendrick Cole Drake Tyler bro you can still kinda put the rest of those names in that convo with a Yeat or Dex bro. Those Scott Pilgrim album cover tapes/slime season/die lit/self titled have cool songs but I can’t let them s***s play for hours like I can with Kanye or Outkast albums. Drake/Kendrick/Cole you can tho but not off of s*** they dropped 2015-2022 lol

This is cherry picking. There’s plenty of bad music from every era, as well as plenty of good music from every era. No one is looking at Famous Dex as representative of what music from 2015-22 sounded like.

This is like saying the 90s is the best era of basketball because Jordan played, and then using Fred VanVleet (no disrespect) as the representative for this era of basketball

Ok on average the same still applies to the top of this generation (Carti Uzi 21 etc.)

S*** decent but ain’t s*** really touching what we used to consider a classic or even great album. In real time (before IYRTITL which is his closest) people used to say Drake still hasn’t dropped that Blueprint esque classic album. Lol peoples standards have devolved into calling anything classic/good

Well that’s u. I grew up on outkast Wayne Ye too. But I’m easily playing future and thug mixtapes as much as theirs probably more.

And someone a bit younger than me probably value uzi and Carti tapes just as much.

I listen to 10 year old future tapes as we speak already 🤷🏽‍♂️ Barter 6 has aged better to me than any Wayne project already.

    He’s right though

Y’all are gonna try to listen to a lot of this music even 5-10 years from now (let alone 10-15/20 years from now) and think that s*** is cringey. Lmao try listening to like famous Dex or some s*** now

As opposed to 96-04 Outkast or even albums like Doggystyle College Dropout C1/C2 that still hold up today

    This has to be bait

There is no wrong opinion itt.

It all depends on your preference.

I will say in general though that while production, adlibs, and experimentation have stepped up in the last 5 or so years, lyricism and rapping skill died down especially in the mainstream.

Like Lil Baby's supposed to be that dude rn and I respect his impact and feature run but even Ludacris had better bars and skills than him.

Even many on KTT think that Kanye and "The Big 3" are still carrying hip hop in the past 5 years or so even though I don't share that opinion personally.

    Late aughts were abysmal

    Eminem dropped Relapse
    Jay dropped BP3
    Wayne dropped Rebirth

Those were the established vets. Economy crashed and CDs tanked so hardly anyone could put out music. Young crop came and went. Terrible transition to pop mainstream for a lot of artists with like sung hooks that sounded like s*** tacked on

Almost every classic that’s dropped since 2015 has been by artists who were already hot way before 2015. 2015 itself was an amazing year for music. If you say 2016-2022, then it’s certified the worst.

    16 was even greater

Why the hell should Barter 6 not be in the same category as Daytona?

One of the most influential rap projects of all time and one of the best trap projects ever. It absolutely deserves to be mentioned next to Daytona.

These racist undertones in the belittling of trap music gotta stop.

Rap is an ever evolving genre of music. It’s constantly in a state of evolution and expansion, more than any other genre.

Just because it doesn’t sound like the boom bap of the 90s doesn’t mean it’s not rap music. You’re putting the genre and the culture in a box that it shouldn’t be in.

S***s just not on the same level lyrically or structure/content wise lmao. Dude just get high ramble about nothing over hard ass beats which can be great but that being compared to an album like Daytona is why someone will make the comment dude in OP made. People want to over-credit the Carti, Uzi, Thug type acts in an effort to not appear out of touch or “racist” as you put it lmaoooo. People will dead ass compare actual lyrical structured s*** to some high Nigga rambling about nothing lol. Uzi Carti Thug nem can get away with metaphors Wayne or Sean would be clowned for meanwhile a Nigga like Pusha/Tyler/Logic has to come up with some groundbreaking s*** lol. And they all get judged the same which is why the game is the way it is now why would a Nigga actually try just to get judged more harshly

That’s why dude in OP says this era sucks. The standards and actual effort have completely melted away lol

Idk man I’m playing Die Lit more than Daytona. Two albums that came out the same year. It’s just a better album IMO but Daytona is really good too.

All that metaphor wordplay stuff is fire when done right but ngl I don’t value it as much as I did when I was younger.

I prefer the first group of years too. more better albums/projects.

I’m not sure how big of a difference it is though. Haven’t really thought it out, just wanted to make the point hip hop has gotten worse as time moved. Saw some folks dismissing that notion.

For me, I judge it on my top artists. Drake had ML & IFYRTL in that timeframe. NWTS is a classic but I’ll take two over one
    Nas music output 15-22> obviously

    Latter years have some heat

But it’s all subjective. There’s no law that says rap music is better when the lyrics are more thought out.

Music is about an overall sound, a feeling. It’s not books where the most merit something gets is how well it’s written.

A lot of the criticism around trap music does in fact have racist undertones because people’s main criticism is “they’re not saying anything with a message” or white people’s favorite “they’re mumbling I can’t understand them”.

    Two things:

    1. I know people that can relate to a Future, Lil Baby, or Thug way more than they relate to a “lyrical” rapper. So the fact that they’re not saying anything important is extremely false and subjective. There are plenty of lyrical miracle wannabe rappers who are saying a bunch of words fast but actually not saying anything (Logic, Joyner Lucas, Eminem in recent years).

    2. Just because they speak with southern slang and accents does not mean they are mumbling and white people need to understand that. How words come out of someone’s mouth has nothing to do with how intelligent that person is or how smart they are. And just because YOU (not you personally but in general) can’t understand what someone is saying, doesn’t mean there isn’t an entire demographic of people who can. For example: I do not speak Spanish, but I think Rosalia has the third best album of the year so far even though I literally cannot understand a word she is saying on the entire album.

Great trap music is definitely able to be on the same level as a great lyrical album, and there’s no logical and fair argument you could make that would prove that otherwise.

I love Pusha T and I love all of his albums, but I’ve gotten way more out of all of the great trap albums of the past 6-7 years. No disrespect to Pusha, but “lyrical” doesn’t automatically equal “better”.

It’s music. It’s a complete audio experience, not who can write the best words on a piece of paper.
