although this is basically a trite statement whenever this topic comes up:

mainstream hip hop has been boring and stagnant for a while, anything interesting will mostly coming from the underground/alternative spheres at this point

Facts. And maybe it’s just me: but the mainstream hip hop bubble feel like it’s gotten smaller/cloudier.

the two largest stars got used as pawns off each other just so the Carter familv can win another Grammy

everyone else in the future, Travis, Kodak tier of rappers are having to run to twitch streamers to even get attention or getting attention from doing nothing , dead/in jail or just minstrel shows that slip in and out of conscious to do anything for attention or clout, or reaching out to pop stars for clout like its 2012

To all you 2016 ppl that said hip hop was just for fun F*** YOU you are responsible low iq piece of s***

It’s still sad tho. I liked when diverse, highly produced blockbuster rap albums were a regular thing.

The culture is shifting. Kendrick, Tyler, and Doechii are seeing a lot of success right now. It’s clear people wanna hear something new.

absolutely, just look at who we consider to be our biggest artists rn: kendrick, drake, travis, etc

these guys have been here for damn near 15+ years, and we have 0 artists from the 2020s that have been able to combine quality and wide accessibility in the same that they were able to. idk what happened but looking at the state of mainstream hip hop in 2025 compared to 2015 is just sad

Yall rly worried about the media circus and zeitgeist more than the art form itself

Spending too much time worrying about if something is a classic rather than enjoying it enough to consider it such

Mainstream hiphop had maybe a 5 year run after MBDTF where labels were really letting artists rock with anything

Idk why we’re acting like this was anything that was sustainable or meant to be the norm

Be blessed that you saw it happen.

yeah. though this might be my perception bc of when i grew up, the 2012 - 2018 era of hip hop was so great for seeing mainstream artists create albums and mixtapes that were genuinely exciting to listen to front to back

hip hop is in a dark place because you don't like the state of the mainstream stars and refuse to check out anyone that isn't already popular? seems like you just like mainstream music
