  • Mfs always become some underground rap experts when this topic comes up

The mainstream is the lifeblood of any genre. Underground/indie scene is always full of talent, in EVERY genre. What separates the genres and what keeps a genre healthy is the mainstream. Rap mainstream was amazing up until like mid to late 00's when people started questioning if it was really in trouble. But s*** that looks like a golden era compared to what we have now. Drake, Cole and Kendrick were coming up. Kanye and Wayne were in their primes etc..

Now the mainstream is....still Drake, Cole and Kendrick. It's never happened before, and it's not because those guys are so good lol there was a time in the early 10's when it felt like it was going somewhere. But the late 10's and this entire decade so far has been a disaster for the health of the genre as a whole.

The culture is shifting. Kendrick, Tyler, and Doechii are seeing a lot of success right now. It’s clear people wanna hear something new.

  • Lol OP a generic ass nigga can't find good music and it's out there maybe your mainstream pool will get better by summer til then nigga WE up

although this is basically a trite statement whenever this topic comes up:

mainstream hip hop has been boring and stagnant for a while, anything interesting will mostly coming from the underground/alternative spheres at this point

WHAZ UNDERGROUND ARE U ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT??? NOBODY GIVES AF ABOUT THE UNDERGROUND. FOR DECADES THE MAINSTREAM WAS SO EXCITING AND NOW WE HAVE TO CARE ABOUT SONGS WITH 3 MILLION CLICKS

Mainstream hiphop had maybe a 5 year run after MBDTF where labels were really letting artists rock with anything

Idk why we’re acting like this was anything that was sustainable or meant to be the norm

Be blessed that you saw it happen.

Labels gave mainstream rock/pop artists creative freedom for a whole 15 years between the late 60s-early 80s, even as the economy faltered and music became more and expensive to produce. By that comparison, I think it's fair for hip-hop fans to feel shortchanged

yeah. though this might be my perception bc of when i grew up, the 2012 - 2018 era of hip hop was so great for seeing mainstream artists create albums and mixtapes that were genuinely exciting to listen to front to back

I spontaneously googled “2015 rap albums”. Bro look at that s***, it’s not just that we’re getting old

  • Feb 11

    Crunk Era.
    Snap Era.
    Autotune Era.
    Blog Era.
    Drill era.
    Mumble rap era.
    SoundCloud era.

We’ve seen you every few years, OP. Hip Hop will be fine. Will you?

  • Hip hop consumers need to learn how to look in other places for their fix. There are artist and scenes that get no recognition because of the social programming
We could be in the experimental hip hop era right now

that era had the best mix of mainstream blockbuster albums that were interesting everyone can enjoy there’s still great new music coming out but everything feels so niche and the big releases are kinda by legacy acts

it’s kind of telling that in 2010 the biggest artists were a few years in and someone that was 15 years in was an old head now the biggest artists are 15+ years in

Please, for the love of God, dig through the digital crates and realize that the days of radio and the press pushing good music to you is over.

Music is more segmented more than ever before. NLU was a rare break from that as was some other things.

There's plenty of good music dropping. Ya'll just want iconic moments to be attached to it.

Its a valid complaint. The s*** they used to spoon feed us was GOOD.

    True.

50 Cent was damn near ready to retire and become a full time business mogul and entertainer before turning 35 years old in 2010. Music became his side hustle post Curtis.

Nowadays, you'd be clowned for falling back on the rap game that young and niggas pushing 40 who debuted more than a decade ago are still treated like the young ringleaders in rap. Even Future is only a year younger than Wayne.

Lil Baby's supposed to be a ringleader but the Drake/Kendrick beef is STILL overshadowing his entire release and now niggas ain't even talking about Dominique(the album) anymore except for hardcore stans.

Even Carti's been losing some of his hype since his fans went berserk on him. I'm sure I Am Music will live up to the hype but it's insane how the new guard still can't outshine the old guard to this very day.

You niggas don’t like hiphop, you just judge based on the mainstream. Shut the f*** up man, damn
