yup, no one wants to admit it and i got s*** on and called a “””white hipster””” for it, but the prevalence of trap has been a double edged sword for hip-hop
on one hand it has allowed the genre to blow up and become more popular than ever, without trap, rap music wouldn’t had reached the peaks and seen the popularity that it has most likely
on the other hand, how simplistic it is to make (along with advances in technology that makes music making easier than ever) allows people to churn out some of the most derivative, soulless, redundant s*** out over and over again with little to no consequence
it’s also a bit of a conundrum, because no one wants to experiment and risk missing out on profits or alienating their fanbases, versus just shoveling them the same tired bullshit over and over again, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it pretty much
also, that isn’t necessarily to say that all trap music is lazy (there’s lazy boom bap beats and co as well) or that it’s inherently an inferior form of hip hop or anything like that, i just think how easy it is to make and produce in terms of something that’s vaguely pleasing or passable to the ear, allows producers to s*** out beats en masse that are serviceable, but they don’t move the genre forward at all—and anything that is remotely interesting or unique is either pared down through a bunch of producers collaborating on a beat to the point where there is no discernible style, or it is driven into the ground and becomes oversaturated (looking at those opium boys)

We went from T.I. and Jeezy to a bunch of dumb artists that sound the same on every album.
Rap game just too boring we need some disses or someone to revive the game s*** just too stale
most of the artists who were making the best trap over the last 7 years either moved on or faded away but the sound is still popular letting the rank amateurs come in
that’s why metro’s album was so big it borderline felt like a throwback
why is there a selfie in op?
To let us know the opinion came from somebody attractive so we should listen

Hip hop being the face of mainstream black culture for decades is more destructive
You can tell who here got into rap through Drake/Kanye/Cudi and are the ones responsible for this popification and dilution of rap as an ability more than a pallette. They'll blame it all on the "money, gun, d****, hoes" artists when crime declined while artists like Biggie and Nas and Ice Cube and Scarface and UGK all made incredible art out of their surroundings. Wayne is like the only guy you can say has had as negative an impact as that crop with the fetishization of his work rate.
y'all post in this thread ASAP

You’re ignoring a few things that are different between Cube Nas Face and BIG vs. people like YB Durk Pooh Shiesty etc but moreso the type of music they influence lol. Mainly the effort put into their raps even if it was gun and d**** talk. Even in the 2000’s someone if was trying to sound like Cassidy Juelz Wayne there was a certain effort there for even the worst knockoff niggas. After the 5 year or so transition of Flocka Gucci Lil B > Keef Durk etc > Migos Thug Future etc > YB Lil Baby and so on the base template for ALL mainstream aspiring rappers is lower than its ever been.
As far as the guns and d**** s*** as a result of the above being what has dominated mainstream music trends for a decade, you have artists like Drake even having identity crisis and dabbling in that type of subject matter and imagery beyond the casual s*** that “alternative/non street” rap acts like Tribe, Ye, Outkast or even someone like LL didn’t have to do because you could exist in the mainstream without having to have that aspect to you. Ye himself is making trap albums with future and claiming GD rapping in staccato post Future/Migos flow on most of his songs. It’s bled into almost every corner of mainstream aspiring artists subject matter/music in a way that hasn’t in the past. Lol even the Smino Cordae type rappers that are the last remnants of the mainstream alternative type rappers have to slide in those type of bars with the “I ain’t saying I’m a thug” disclaimers lol

Almost all the guys you trailed off on are Wayne adjacent.
And the content is not the problem when Milo can rap about laundry and Herbo can rap about the streets and both be good rappers. The problem is nobody really cares if you're a good rapper anymore. You just have to have the right sound for passive listening, to fit in the right playlist.
And although Drake is a very good rapper when he wants to be, he never has to be. Kanye doesn't have to be. Tyler doesn't have to be. Travis doesn't have to be. Future doesn't have to be. Etc etc. They can make good music without it.

Thug YB Lil Baby at times and Keef? Out of all the names in that post lol? Regardless I don’t see the point of what you’re saying
Wayne influenced Thug but what came after took way more from Thug than Wayne lol. It ain’t even about who influenced it it’s just about the fact that after they came thru the game seems to be stuck in a place that other trends or sound changes haven’t left the genre frozen in for 5 arguably close to 10 years at a time
Edit: this was before u edited lol I agree wit everything you added. The fans and what they accept is a big problem

Lollipop is like the most obvious precursor to Future's career
I just think popular artists desperately need to switch it up
Imagine big names like Drake, Future, Lil Baby, Travis etc. all just drop albums over Griselda beats or some electronic Sophie type stuff or something just completely left field and new
Everytime someone says something like this people jump and say “there not trying to alienate their fan base, they don’t f*** with weirdo s*** like that” and that’s such a stupid ass take
I think good artists are able to make unique and creative things without alienating their fans. It’s up to them to figure out how to make it cool. Imagine if Future said f*** it I’m gonna make a 90s boom bap album and still figure out how to make it wavy and get a hit. That’s how new sounds and styles are born
This is why Kanye been so praised throughout most of his career. Dude was doing a new sound every album and still making hits
I recently saw a YouTube video where someone put Carti vocals over old Dilla beats and that s*** hit

This what I been saying
Give Lil Baby better beats and I'd actually be able to pay attention
patiently waiting for charles bryant wave/brave double disc album that will save hip hop this year
This what I been saying

I think it would make a lot of up and coming artists try new things too
I think hip hop just needs more diversity on a mainstream level. That’s why the early 2010s was so unique. So many different styles and sounds bubbling up was amazing
also hip hop may be dying, but it will never be dead because wu tang is forever
i hate how some of the top hip-hop artists rarely drop now
also artists need to go back to always promoting their music, and stop dropping and then hardly acknowledging the album

who are the top artists to u
who are the top artists to u
cant speak for him but I think the general feeling in the rap game of these vibes kinda started creeping up when wayne, kanye, drake, cole, kendrick, etc solidly weren’t the top active and relevant artists anymore and there was no one after to replace them. tyler is someone that I think fulfills one of those slots now and Travis gets it by default cuz of how successful he is but his music lacks the meat and potatoes pause lol that Ye Kendrick drake etc primes had.
i think production is mainly the issue. there is probably less craft involved in making a song that sounds ‘current’ than ever before.
the production of the 00’s and early 10’s seemed pretty difficult to replicate without extensive practice and work. nowadays you can just take a loop off splice, put some 808’s under it and you can end up with a beat that wouldn’t sound out of place on a lot of modern records.
i think this fast food approach to beat making for sure rubs off on the artists who are selecting these beats. making uninspiring beats has been too rewarding for how accessible it is and now you’ve got a situation where everyone is sick of this sound but have minimal inspiration about where to take it next.
and it’s lack of motivation to even experiment with the production because no one is even gonna wanna get on something that doesn’t sound mainstream nine times out of ten
i tried to pitch my beats a handful of times and niggas want me to rip out my kicks, replace them with 808s and hi-hats like cmon now dawg, and all i make is boom bap with barely odd sample usage
If hip-hip dead it’s Drake fault
He was the last guy in charge
Notice everybody found a successor instead of this greedy ass nigga found the weeknd and he don't even rap
Hov > kanye > cole
Dre > em > 50 > kendrick
50 > game > banks > buck > yayo
Wayne > drake > nicki
Kanye > big sean > cudi > travis
Ross > meek
Etc
What star did this nigga create on ovo? This is an honest question
