Even the mainstream is doing decent smh what are you even on about. Also, why the seperation of underground and mainstream if we're talking about hiphop. I fell like y'all make this distinction for the sake of making these pointless threads
most of the artists who were making the best trap over the last 7 years either moved on or faded away but the sound is still popular letting the rank amateurs come in
that’s why metro’s album was so big it borderline felt like a throwback
last part of your comment is funny tbh.
a throwback to what? The 2016-2018 era we deadass just left
Thread title should be changed to “RAP” hiphop been dead.
Rap is the commercialized form of hip hop.
Hip hop is social commentary for people who are disenfranchised and don’t often have a voice.
Can you be hip hop rapping about having 100 million dollars regardless of how much your marketed as “down to earth”?
Rap is dying because the audience is maturing but the genre isn’t and the people who make the decisions don’t want you maturing either.
Who is going to buy that Gucci inventory if I don’t keep you insecure?
Its cause the new gen cant deliver the new superstars or they died
is it because they truly cant 'deliver' or because theres not enough capital backing that would make them stand out?
first things first, lets get obvious out of the way: our old goats are not that marketable anymore because everybody from wayne to ross to kendrick to rocky is slowly leaving the golden 18-35 demographic to transition into 'adulthood proper.' this is the reason why the only people leaving some kind of mark are the ones with acquired wealth able to push through and still work their old fame to reach charts. at the same time, all younger stars established in the latter part of the 10s thanks to Soundcloud wave didn't live long enough to fully show their potential, largely due to the same makings that brought them so high up and provided so much monetary confidence in them
now that those backers (by backers I mean labels and the industry in general btw) acknowledged how volatile is that combination of easy access and people unable to work through their vices (obviously because theyre way too young for that), they have largely moved on to other venues of stardom and other genres. what previously was hip hop music as the dominant genre is now slowly being replaced by a combination of 'beat'-adjacent sounds as interim for the next true breakout in a form or some other genre or other landscape-defining artist. and here comes my theory
I was reading this interview with D*** Clark, who's this really old music show host. broke out everybody from Stevie to Madonna, hugely influential. in his 1973 interview with Lester Bangs he gave the following quote:
Again statistically, look at the record books and you'll see that every ten years in the middle of the decade some sort of freak superstar arises. <...> Sometime in the next two years there'll be an individual who will be a white, male, single performing artist. Probably American.
so he pretty much described David Bowie, and we know how that went. I'm now thinking that by mid 20s we'll settle the whole 'is rap dead' debate quite decisively. for my money the 'new freak' is gonna be some sort of Fred Again-ish producer slash singer. probably racially ambiguous or white. not American but from English-speaking country. so yeah, idm-Drake basically

by the way just to drive my point further, exactly in 1975 bowie releases an album that gives him his first-ever #1 on billboard US. the name of the album?

Most of his peers age wise haven’t either. Kendrick really hasn’t except keen. Don rollover for trav? Coke has dreamville. But non have really produced an artist of their own or similar stature. Is what it is tbh

You're slow and obtuse.
Future - Young Thug
Big Sean - SayItAintTone
Wiz Khalifa - Taylor Gang
Wale - Meg the Scallion

As much as i love drake “peers” neither of them give the face of hiphop feeling….kendrick disappear to long and cole to humble
Drake had a label longer than all of these guys and never created a rap star
S*** even kendrick got keem right now

I think that’s a bit rude lol
I had no clue future put thug on? I must be missing something. In any case thugs actually someone who has put other people on but he kinda put himself on rather than coming from a previously established raper run imprint and stable of artist.
The rest you listed aren’t really as big as them, which is what I said. Sayitainttone is NOT as known as big Sean.are you saying Meg is a wale protege here?

Yea I mention keem in my other reply. He’s basically made it an rnb imprint aside from smiley and I have no clue if he’s just trying to make it a Toronto exclusive thing which is what it seems like rn.
Edit: I do question if every big star doing that is a n expected desire that we project because of the history of it rather than just respecting wether they want to do it or not. He could also suck at it and there’s that too.

Na i feel like that to maybe he just doesn’t know how to find the new rap star lmao

it was easier and honestly better off for him to create a star in r&b which he did with party
Hip hop is declining in popularity? No s*** it was the most popular genre in the world there is only one place for it to go
This whole rant sets popularity and “coolness” to the general public as the gauges for if a genre is doing well
Wtf? Who cares what the general public thinks???
Hiphop isn’t “cool” anymore bc trendy white people are moving on to the next thing. If anything that is good..
You didn’t mention s*** about the quality of hiphop coming out just popularity

…that was kind of the general gist of this thread…
when you have stupid bullshit like this climbing the charts you can see why people are starting to be embarrassed listening to the mainstream stuff
