You’re ignoring a few things that are different between Cube Nas Face and BIG vs. people like YB Durk Pooh Shiesty etc but moreso the type of music they influence lol. Mainly the effort put into their raps even if it was gun and d**** talk. Even in the 2000’s someone if was trying to sound like Cassidy Juelz Wayne there was a certain effort there for even the worst knockoff niggas. After the 5 year or so transition of Flocka Gucci Lil B > Keef Durk etc > Migos Thug Future etc > YB Lil Baby and so on the base template for ALL mainstream aspiring rappers is lower than its ever been.

As far as the guns and d**** s*** as a result of the above being what has dominated mainstream music trends for a decade, you have artists like Drake even having identity crisis and dabbling in that type of subject matter and imagery beyond the casual s*** that “alternative/non street” rap acts like Tribe, Ye, Outkast or even someone like LL didn’t have to do because you could exist in the mainstream without having to have that aspect to you. Ye himself is making trap albums with future and claiming GD rapping in staccato post Future/Migos flow on most of his songs. It’s bled into almost every corner of mainstream aspiring artists subject matter/music in a way that hasn’t in the past. Lol even the Smino Cordae type rappers that are the last remnants of the mainstream alternative type rappers have to slide in those type of bars with the “I ain’t saying I’m a thug” disclaimers lol

“Tribe, Ye, Outkast or even someone like LL didn’t have to do because you could exist in the mainstream without having to have that aspect to you.”

You bring this up like Outkast wasnt full of gun talk all over southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and those “Im not a thug but” vibes on return of the g off aquemini.

Like LL didnt have an album literally titled 14 shots to the dome.

Like Tribe looked at as soft and progressive but remember these niggas was one A&R decision away from having an entire career derailed if “Georgie Porgie” (Show Business OG) had dropped on Low End Theory.

Drake has helped way too many careers in rap for you to make such a stupid post.

Drake didn't help s***, he finds the hottest song buzzing in the hood already and jump on it or jump on a buzzing artist second single f*** are you taking about? Every artist that he “helped” already had a hiphop following

Hip ho…fuck it MUSIC + guns and d**** have always had a symbiotic relationship (how you think hip hop was getting funded)

Even jazz artists/clubs were getting shot up by the Mafia if bad business occurred lol.

And by doing that, what happens? The song blows the f*** up, the artist whose song he hopped on gets the kind of exposure they wouldn't have gotten otherwise, setting them up to take that momentum and run with it. He's done that for more artists than anyone else in rap history. The man has been running the game for the better part of two decades, that's enough work for anyone. He pushes new acts in his own way and those smart enough to capitalize on the look end up better off. It's too many artists who have credited Drake for giving them career-defining looks for you to be posting ignorant s*** like this lmao.

yup, no one wants to admit it and i got s*** on and called a “””white hipster””” for it, but the prevalence of trap has been a double edged sword for hip-hop

on one hand it has allowed the genre to blow up and become more popular than ever, without trap, rap music wouldn’t had reached the peaks and seen the popularity that it has most likely

on the other hand, how simplistic it is to make (along with advances in technology that makes music making easier than ever) allows people to churn out some of the most derivative, soulless, redundant s*** out over and over again with little to no consequence

it’s also a bit of a conundrum, because no one wants to experiment and risk missing out on profits or alienating their fanbases, versus just shoveling them the same tired bullshit over and over again, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it pretty much

Been saying this since like 2015 when artists like Kendrick and Ye were hopping on the trap sound after Lifestyle. It all sounds the same and the lyrics are so simple, it was bound to result in anybody and everybody feeling like they have what it takes to be a rapper

Happy that at least there's a broad spectrum of options out there. I don't have to listen to the mainstream artists, can just ignore their albums completely

Migos' trajectory changed after Drake hopped on Versace, they themselves have admitted this several times. The Weeknd has admitted to his career changing after working with Drake on Take Care and rolling with him for like a year and has given him props several times. Rocky and Kendrick all gave Drake props for the looks he gave them early on in their careers. Lil Baby has given Drake credit for sending him Yes Indeed and giving him that look and said the industry spotlight on him changed after that. I can list off several other artists who have gotten their biggest look yet thanks to Drake. Future has thanked Drake for all he's done for him. 21 Savage has also credited Drake for being essential to his career and spoke on how Drake doesn't get enough credit for how many niggas he's put on.

Only idiots deny all Drake has done for other niggas or act like because he didn't sign those artists to his label, it somehow nullifies all he did for them and nobody has done that for as many niggas as Drake and while he was doing all that, he also maintained a chokehold on the game for 14+ years now. Say what you wanna say, but at the end of the day, it's many people who the industry and even casual fans wouldn't have ever given a chance if not for Drake.

I think threas is more about proteges rather than smaller collaborations opening up an artist to a bigger audience via a song or two. Not disputing the facts of what ur saying just that it’s kinda not the point of what the convo was I think…

when someone says something is dying nine times out of ten it’s about the popularity versus quality my guy

there will always be contrarians (like yourself) who like to point out their favorite token underground artists as some sort of beacon that singlehandedly disproves any notion of the genre going down the s***ter

he’s done a lot for a lot of diff artists but he hasn’t found a new superstar to carry his torch (like Wayne, Jay etc. did) is the overarching point

But my point still stands. Drake has never had the mindset of finding some sort of protege. He's always been focused on himself and elevating other people around him in the ways he can and his collabs have done wonders for people's careers. Who is Cole or Kendrick's protege? Niggas in here giving them cop outs because they're not ''the face of the game'' but Drake can say he's been busing running s*** for 15 years and has never taken a break while they've both taken loads of breaks. Why didn't they use that time to find and push their own proteges? Not to mention neither of them have put on ANYONE the way Drake has. Some of you just wanna talk s***.

wouldn’t Cole’s be JID and Kendrick’s essentially be Keem per se?

the style of music they make isn’t conducive to stardom (well save Keem i guess) but i think they at least gave it a shot

The only person I can even really credit for PUSHING and actively being involved in the careers of their signees is Wayne and Eminem with 50 Cent. Hov signed Cole and treated him like a disease. Hov didn't even wanna sign Kanye and Dame Dash ended up having to sign Kanye but somehow, today, Hov gets credit for Kanye's career. Even Rihanna, people never talk about how she was paying for her own music videos and had to take the reigns of her own career after her second album to really establish herself before the real label push and support came.

Every artist is responsible for the outcome of their careers. Wayne was working with everyone on Young Money but Nicki and Drake were the ones who were able to capitalize on it the most and they're his two biggest success stories today. It is what it is.
